iPod Converting Lossless library to AAC

I've made a back up of all of my Lossless music and I want to convert what's in my iTunes library to 256kb/s AAC. Is there an easy way to do this in iTunes and keep all of my metadata?

*and as a side note: I'm thinking of picking up a 3rd generation iPod shuffle today. Does anyone want to give me a little review on it? Is it worth it?

Yes, but when I convert it just makes a second copy in my iTunes with 0 play count and it's not in any of my playlists.

EDIT: nevermind, it does keep the playcount data. I guess I'll just live with those songs out of my playlists. It's not like I listen to playlists more than a few times anyway.
