Have you tried the snapshot not the 0.9.2 one like I suggested?

How is he insulting your political views?

Now you are one insulting people, I hope ye be banned.

Yes I have tried snapshot and it still sucks.

He is telling me I'm dumb and implying I'm not 'good' at mathematics because I'm all for McCain.

From Apple:

H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

What is the "real" max bitrate apple tv will stream correctly? (not counting ff)

I've read that but was wondering if someone had done any testing and found the "sweet spot".

ok an update! and please guys let's back on course ...

handbrake snapshot converted my MKV with AC3 5.1 audio to an M4V file with AC3 passing thru...

the picture is a kinda pixelated and blocky... and ...

i STILL can't change the artwork through itunes. now i'm baffled! do m4v's also not have the ability to have custom artwork in itunes?

i think i'm going to abandon ship and just go VisualHub standard Apple TV mp4 setting with stereo!

I'm going to beat both Visual Hub and Handbrake snap shot by buying Final Cut studio with compressor.. it only costs $1200.00

Did you use a slightly higher video bitrate than the original file?

i used their apple tv setting and didn't touch anything. only changed audio to AC3 passthru.

was there something i needed to change?
So what was the Bitrate? Change it to higher or equal to the file your encoding (I have found it keeps it decent without blockiness or pixilation).

ah i see.. i'll check next time...

however, if i can't put artwork on the m4v that handbrake spits out to me, then there's no point anyway for me.

i don't get why i can't tag these files with artwork?! it's frustrating.

i tag the file in metax and it finishes writing ... i go back to itunes ... the artwork doesn't kick in.

i change a tag to see if it'll initialize (cuz metax is glitchy like that) and nothing happens.
Because your meant to replace the file in iTunes. You have a Video > Tag it with MetaX > Add to iTunes, that is how you do it.

I'm trying this new HB with a .mkv file I haven't been able to get anything to notice as a source. The good news is that the new HB does indeed see it as the source, but trying to encode it HB crashed on me. I'm trying it again now and hopefully it will make it through.

The other thing that concerns me is that during the encoding my fan speeds are at 6,000rpms and are screaming. I don't think I have ever seen my fan speeds that high. Normal?

Try updating your VLC to the latest version. That helped for me, but HB still crashes now and then. Also videos playback with some stuttering in the first few seconds of the video regardless of syncing them to the appletv. I think HB snapshot has a ways to go. I'll be using both visual hub and HB. Visual hub for movies that I don't care about (because fast and easy), and HB for movies I would like the visuals be good. I'm still waiting to purchase compressor though, then I can get rid of both.

Thanks for the info. I had the latest version of VLC already installed. The second encoding finished without any problems. I'm encoding another now and so far so good.

I did sync the first one to my ATV and watched a few minutes of it. I didn't notice any video stutter at all. I'm not sure why that is happening to you, but I didn't experience it at all.

As a side note... people should stop crying in this thread. An other wise great thread, with really good information, is being ruined by a bunch of adolescent behavior. Get over it.

I'm not acting like an adolescent if that's what you're saying (although I am one..) but other people are.

You just contradicted yourself, how would you know your not acting like one if you haven't reached adulthood? BTW you are acting/being one.

It will handle more than 6 mbps with AC3. I have four 720p movies at this rate, but there are still some scenes with pixelation.
Is that the films or the AppleTV causing the pixillation in some scenes?

720p at 6 mbps will have more pixelation than 480p at 6 mbps. My tinkering suggests that for 1080p, 14 mbps gives near Blu-ray quality on those files, and they are in the 10-14 gb range in file size. Of course, those won't even play on an ATV - you'd need a dedicated computer, such as a Mini.

A Mac Mini could handle a 1080p file at a bitrate of 14 mbps?

Sure, as long as you use Plex. It handles my Blu-Ray rips (about 30 mbps) just fine, so long as I don't have any other app running in the background. It even passes DTS digital audio out the optical port to my Onkyo receiver.

Why would Plex be required? Does it use different decoders to QuickTime?

The great thing with Compressor is you can set up QuickClusters and utilize all 8-cores for compressing, like if you have an 8-core Mac Pro. Rips through video like butter.
