Converting Video Files for iPhone and Apple TV 2

I'm converting some of my movies to be viewed on Apple TV 2 and my iPhone. My question is, should I just use the Apple TV 2 settings on Handbrake, and if I want to watch them on my computer or iPhone, just use the video with the settings for Apple TV 2?

Will there be any major setback if I watch the videos with the Apple TV 2 settings on my iPhone?

There is a preset called Universal that'll rip at full size but still be compatible with iPhones. I user it for iPhone, iPad and both versions of AppleTV

Is it better to just convert them to Apple TV 2 setting and then if I want to watch the Apple TV 2 setting on my iPhone, just watch it?

I'm basically looking for the best quality for my TV, and then if I want, the ability to watch it on my iPhone.

For instance, would it be better to just convert the .avi file to Apple TV2 setting, and then if I want to watch it on my iPhone, just use the Apple TV2 setting file?

How do you want to watch your movie on the iPhone? If you want to stream it to the phone a third party app like AirVideo will convert almost any file to be iPhone compatible on the fly (great app by the way). If you want to load the movie on the iPhone it may not work if it was ripped for the ATV setting (not sure about this, though). I am just starting to take things through their paces (got an ATV2 for Xmas and I have an iPad and iPhone 4).

There are no downsides to using the ATV2 preset in Handbrake as long as you have the latest versions of iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. All of these devices have the same A4 processor and can handle the same content and encodings. The ATV2 preset has much higher quality than Universal but you won't notice the difference when you are watching it on the iPhone because the screen is so small. The benefit is you only need to encode one time and have one file and that one file not only looks and works great on your mobile device, it also looks great on the big screen HDTV.

Oh and you are using the nightly with the "Apple TV 2" preset and not the regular Handbrake release which only has a preset for "Apple TV", correct?

Yup, I am using the latest nightly build. So, I can just convert everything to the Apple TV 2 setting, and just use that same file if I want to watch it on my iPhone for trips and such. I was basically just looking for the best quality for my apple tv 2 that would also look good on an iPhone and iPad.

Is the apple tv 2 setting the best setting if I want to watch the movies on an iPad?
