Hi 🙂
Is there a free software that can convert video files in Mac? I've got tons of video saved as mpg, but need to convert them before I import them to iMovie.

If you need to re-encode the video, Handbrake is usually a good choice.

If you have e.g. H.264 video in Matroska files (.mkv), Subler is a much quicker alternative, as you dont need to re-encode the video, just put it in a new container. Handbrake for all its options does not have any way to pass through a video stream un-altered.

Thanks! No idea what re-encode does... But I'll look it up 🙂

One thing's for sure. Handbrake makes the fans go crazy on my new MBP M1!

Probably depends on the settings. If you use Handbrake's VideoToolbox option, it should lighten the CPU load.

Sadly, 10-bit HEVC encoding isn't available via Mac hardware. It's only done in software with precious few controls.

The CPU went rocket high, but the weird thing is that almost all the RAM is used even though there are only a few open programs.

Thanks! I will try. I hope there's nothing wrong with my map because the fans went crazy...
Handbrake will do that. It is using 100% of just about everything available. A Mac in good shape ought to be able to handle the load and heat.

It's great to use as a stress test. When I had my hackintosh overclocked (too much) it was the only thing that would actually overload and freeze the system.
