summer is finally taking it toll on my thighs and my mba, so i finally bit the bullet and bought coolbook. i installed it and entered in the settings from the "huge success undervolting mba" thread yet it seems not to be working, the fan still spools up to 6200 rpm regardless of what im doing. isnt it supposed to keep it cool enough so the fan never reaches max rpm's? do you guys have any other settings other than the ones posted on that post that worked better for you?

ps: it is at 122 deg f at 6200 rpm's is that temp lower than usual?

what are your settings. Can you take a pic of your settings. I had issues getting it to work properly form the trial version to the real version. I had to redownload and reinstall. Now its chilled to 700mhz and 37 degrees Celcius.

adapter settings:
1200mhz @ 0.9750v
1400 @ 0.9875
1600 @ 0.9875

throttling level: high
temp limit: 85c

never used the trial version, just used the full version right away. if i reinstall to i need to pay again or can i just use the same key they emailed me?

damn this fan wont stop...

When you bought coolbook they sent you the registration key (usually your email). Just resubmit the information in the preference area, and that'll activiate coolbook if you choose to reinstall it. Also, not sure but try lowering the mgz... That may be a small cause of the fan issue. I know that the fan spot spinning after I lowered the megahertz to 800. Now I'm sitting at 700mhz at 37*C.

I also recommend adding the 800 MHz speed. You should also try lowering the voltages for speeds lower than 1600 MHz. My adaptor settings are:
800MHz @ 0.900v
1200MHz @ 0.900v
1600MHz @ 0.950v

.. and 1600 dropped to 1400MHz for battery, just hoping to get a few more minutes on battery :) I seldom get fan noise, only when watching video for extended time.

Please read the Coolbook manual! The process of finding the best voltages for your processor is explained in the manual quite well.

I'd say to definitely add the 800 MHz / 9.0000 V setting. You want to let the machine run on a slow speed when it's waiting for you to do something ;)

Also, sort of stating the obvious... make sure "CoolBook active" is checked.

My particular settings for "Adapter":

800 MHz / 9.000 V
1200 Mhz / 9.500 V
1400 Mhz / 9.750 V
1600 MHz / 9.750 V

Throttling Level: High
Temp limit: Off

Throttling active: checked
CoolBook active: checked

Hope you get it working well for you!

Coolbook 0Mhz

I tried the Coolbook demo and had four frequency/voltage settings in the main window. So I paid for it and entered my registration info. Now I only have one settlng: 0 MHz. Clicking "Add" does nothing (though clicking "Clear" clears the one 0 mhz setting). Clicking "Default" gives me four pairs, all of them 0 MHz.

Manual isn't helpful. I emailed Coolbook's author and received no reply. What am I doing wrong?

thanks for the replies guys, but still a little frustrated. tried everyone of the settings that you guys used and still no luck. the fan is still on full blast the entire time. perhaps i am using the wrong version of coolbook? its version 2.9 is that the correct one? also where do i find the manual for the coolbook settings?

well just try reinstall of the coolbook software, and go from there. I honestly had the same issues but I had to reinstall it to get the settings to stick.

Uninstall. Restart. Install. Enter registration.

800GHz-1200GHz set to 0.9000
1400Ghz-1600GHz set to 0.9500

I've had great success on a 1.8GHz. The highest my temps reach is 63C on the second CPU test. This was using the above settings.

coolbook overheat

Hey guys,

Quick question.. What kind of pair setting will cause my MBP to overheat but still stay powered on? (and not automatically shutdown because of failsafe)

Thanks

I had a question also... I see all these different settings but I am only able to set 798 MHZ or 1598 MHZ and thats it. I've read the manual and can't figure out how to get the other settings.

isnt it supposed to keep it cool enough so the fan never reaches max rpm's?

meh, I don't think so... Default throttling without CoolBook is quite conservative to start with, even too conservative that HD vids can't be seen with it, having 700mhz and so on configured. It's not about shutting fan down, it's about picking your best throttling (as well as fix kernel_task prob for rev A) for your use. My MBA keeps fan going on all the time in summer, which is right now and I don't think anything can be done with it. Afterall, they packed so much in such a thin case, you can't ask for everything.

Why do you care so much about what settings should be used? Just put the lowest and highest at whatever voltage that works (ex : 1.2ghz 0.9v, 1.8ghz : 1v. this is revA). Set it to medium throttling (imo, high is too frequent), and optionally put temperature limit at 85c, so that whenever not in intensive use, it's throttled low for maximum saving, and when it needs it, it'll use its max power. (I never liked using B/2 as it'll even slow down casual activity.) With that setting, my revA has been running very well for quite a while.

I have both power and battery settings the same, but that's because I usually have it powered. But you may want to keep it only at lowest setting on battery to keep it run somewhat longer.

CPU temperature can vary according to the surrounding atmosphere temperature, so it doesn't make sense hearing who has low temp and who has high, until you also report what temperature the surrounding is.

Right now, I'm in a air conditioned room of something like 27c and CoolBook reports below 60c when doing light work. Also note that CoolBook and iStats report different temperature, so you should also state which one you referred.

ok screw half of my last post...

I guess B/2 with high throttling level works fine and it does feel better to be running at lowest mhz when doing nothing. Altho the temperature does not seem to have improved over having 1.2ghz as the lowest, both staying at about 55c when almost idle.

i guess i'll stick with 0.6ghz (0.9v), 1.2ghz (0.9v), 18ghz (1v) for the time being.

auto shut off

Is there anyway to disable my macbook pro from turning off automatically when it gets too hot?

CoolBook does have temperature limit that will throttle CPU down when too hot or use fan control app to increase the fan speed (and noise) to cool it more.
