Cooling MBP

Hey all,

As you would all know, MBP gets stupidly hot at times, so i went out and bought this notebook cooler: http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?act=detail&tbcate=1&id=125

But realise it doesn't do anything! Are they the same for all notebook coolers for MBP (since, the exhaust is not actually at the base, but through the back..)

What are some ways to cool the laptop? I go to a flash based site and the fan starts firing up. If i play a game, the whole thing goes mental.

Also, would extra RAM make it cooler?

MacBook Pros run hot, mine is averaging 60 degrees celsius and can go up to 70+ when running cpu-needy software.
I think I have read somewhere that the upper threshold is aroung 80 degrees celsius.
There are several temperature monitors for macs. They can be found by searching for them in macupdate or versiontracker. iStat menus is one you could try.
So unless your mac is 80+ I would not panic.
 
Really? It doesn't do anything? I've got one of them and It has helped a little. I believe the major components that heat up in a MBP are in that back part where the fans on the coolermaster board are. I have smcfancontrol running on my MBP. It keeps it frosty. My highest temps now are probably mid 60's when I run intense programs. Average temp is about 40-45. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049
 
My MBP can hit 80 when gaming at times, but is normally around 70-74. Otherwise im at 40 idle, 50-60 when listening to music and doing photoshop.
 
You could always look at a lap protector of some sort. I use a Rain Design one and it helps dissipate the heat a lot.
 
I have the Vantec Lapcool 5, which uses two fans as well as elevates the notebook to allow more air circulation, and it's really made only a minor difference -- about 3 C on the CPU and about 4 C on the bottom casing, even with the fans on full blast. The fans seem pretty weak, which may explain why the cooling is so lacklustre.

Has anyone used the Belkin notebook cooler? The "wave" design looks like it help with some serious cooling...
 
I use a program called SMC Fan Control that allows me to manually change the speed of the fans inside my Macbook Pro. It shows the temp and speed at the top next to the airport icon. I have settings at default (1000RPM), 2000RPM, 3000RPM, and 4000RPM. I don't recommend that you keep it at 4000RPM for extended periods of time. I run mine at 2000 most of the time and it runs great. Keeps the computer around 120ºF.

I also use a targus laptop stand that folds out and props up the laptop off the desk. Its silver metal with gray rubber ends.

Any particular reason you don't recommend having them at 4000RPM for extended periods of time? I was planning on having the fans maxed 100% of the time, I don't care about noise and I don't intend to be off AC power for extended periods of time.
 
I have seen mine reach 90c when doing a lot of video encoding. Usually runs at 50c when listening to iTunes and surffing. I did contact apple to see if this was the norm and they told me that 90c was still in speck. I use SMC fan control now and set it to max when I am encoding a movie and it usually does not go past 80c now.

I'm not sure which 'version' the MBP is...
specs are: 2.16Ghz, 120gb, 15", 1Gb Ram.. so yeah, 1 model before those announced in august? I got it just before last christmas, if that gives any indicaation.

yeah I have SMC, and when I play a game, it goes to 60-70 degrees celcius, and i'm little relieved that's still within a safe range, although the SMC fan goes nuts (and I can't hear whats going on in the game). Same deal if I'm on photoshop too, like adding blending options, and the MBP gets angry..
