A friend of mine has asked if its possible to have his whole iPhoto library on his iMac copied to iCloud Photo Library and if so how ?. I for one have no idea could someone please advise

No way to do it right now. Even with the new iCloud Photos web access, it only allows you to download pictures, not upload them. Disappointed in that.

I have not tried it yet but can't you Sync you photos to your iOS Device from iTunes and then let it Sync up to the Photo Library.

My problem is that all of my Photos are in Events and I use Smart Albums to group my Events by text in the Event Name. I do not know how to duplicate this within Photo Library. Anybody have any ideas?

I thought I was a genius thinking that last night and tried it but it doesn't work.

You get an error saying you can't sync photos through iTunes and have iCloud Photo Library turned on. You then either have to delete the photos synced through iTunes or turn off iCloud Library.

I was planning on turning it off syncing all my iPhoto library to my iPad and then turning it back on to let it all go up into iCloud. If I get a chance I'll try it tonight.

I thought I was finally going to be able to ditch my mpb (which I only browse on nowardays) and use an iPad from now on.

Ability to manage all my photos was the only thing keeping me from taking the jump.

Looks like I'll have to wait until next year...

What I am doing is using AirDrop to move my pictures over from my Mac to my iPad which then puts in into iCloud Photo. It will take me a long time to do this since I have 35GB of photos, but I figure I'm in no hurry. I do basically a folder at a time, AirDrop them over and then I give IOS Photos time to do it's thing. This is about the only way to do it until Photos for Mac comes out.

I'm tempted to try but until there is a Mac front end I see all this of limited use.
