copy an app from Mac to MacBook

Hello everybody, I'm pretty new to the Mac world and recently got a MacBook Air M1 and would like, really need to, copy an app and its contents from my Mac mini to the Macbook Air. It's a ECG App that saves and analyzes my ECG recordings. I connect the portable ECG device via USB to my Mini and hit import on the app and it imports all the data from that session. I can then view it by clicking on ''view report'' or ''view ECG". So... is there a way to copy this app and its content over to my Macbook Air. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, just drag and drop the App to an external drive, and then to the other Mac. You'll need to find where it stores the readings and take that as well, unless it stores them with in the App.

Of course, that's assuming that the App is 64 bit otherwise it won't work on the MBA. What OS is the Mini running?
 
Hi Dave,
the Mini is running Monterey same as the Air. The ECG device shows up as drive when I connect it via USB, I then click import in the app and it takes the recorded file on the ECG device and places it somewhere in the app, I assume. The ECG device itself can only store up to 30 hours of recordings and deletes the last file from the device to make room for new recordings. I'll try your suggestion and move that app over to my Air and see what happens.

Why not just download a new copy direct from the App Store? https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ai-ecg-analysis-system/id1582117738?mt=12

The data isn't stored in the app, so copying the app from one computer to another also won't bring your data over.

That’s exactly my point tho… how can I get all the ECG data that is stored on my Mini over to my Air and open/view it with the app only Air? There’s got to be a way. That data is no longer on the ECG device itself it’s on my Mini and needs to be copied or completely moved over to the MacBook.

may not work if the installer creates files in other locations.

One way would be to do a fresh install on the Air and enter some data. Determine where it is kept, and they replace it with the data from the other system.

Note that databases can be very simple or complex. If the data is spread amongst several files, if there are separate indexes, pointers, etc. it can be impossible to copy to a different system.

I would contact the software vendor as to the best way to proceed. They would be the experts.

I think it’s better to download the app for new on your new Mac. The installation may have files installed other than the main app file.

Is the data stored in a file?
Can you locate the file using the finder?

If you can locate where it is, copy the file to a USB flashdrive.
Then connect the flashdrive to the new Mac and copy it over.

I'm going to guess that (once the file is on the MBA) you can just double-click it, and the app that created it will open, too.
 
Hi, here's how you can do it. First, install the App from the App Store onto the Macbook Air. (Obviously, the data won't be there yet, but the app should work.)
Then, go to your Mac Mini and open the Finder. Click the "Go to" menu, and while the menu is open, hold down the option (alt) key. A menu item "Library" will appear. Choose that item.
The folder "Library" will be opened. Now look for a subfolder called "Containers" and open that one.
Now look for a folder that belongs to your app. It might have the same name as the app, or it might be called something like "com.theSoftwareCompanyThatMakesTheApp.theAppName". That's where the app stores its data. When you have found it, copy the entire folder to a USB drive.
Open the same "Containers" folder on your Macbook Air. Make sure the app isn't running on the Air (quit it) and copy the folder from the USB drive to the "Containers" folder. If the Finder asks you whether something should be replaced, just say yes – even if something goes wrong, you cannot lose any data, because the data is not yet on the Macbook Air in the first place. Then restart the app, and all your data should be there.
