alright, i am another one of those guys trying to mix apples and oranges (ie pc's.)

i have a huge music collection residing on a file server (pc). i have on that pc's installed iTunes. i made that iTunes library of music "shared". i can see that library on my 17" PB over the network. i can play from that library. however, i can not select from that shared library on the pc through my PB and then copy to my iPod which is attached to the PB. i am going to assume that this is some sort of digital rights management thingy but thought that i would pose the question anyway. the reason i attach the ipod to the PB and not to the pc is because the pc is downstairs in the dungeon and i don't want the wife to go down there to update the ipod and see where her retirement is going.

anybody have any similar experiences or knowlege of this or am i missing something.

thanks

I'm not quite clear why this is a problem, if all you have to do is walk downstairs to update your iPod?

You could just transfer songs from the PC to your Mac ... burn them to CD, transfer them over the network, what have you. Then you'd have to set up your iPod to work with your Mac instead, and you could avoid the trip downstairs.

As far as I know, Apple only lets you associate one iPod with one computer so that you don't run around giving and getting songs.

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think that's quite right. I think it's one iPod to one Apple account - in other words, you can sync on any of your five machines, but only the songs you bought with the Apple account associated with that iPod.

Of course, I don't have a 'pod, so I wouldn't know for sure.

i'm thinking this is near impossible....
pc - mac - ipod

can't think of any way to do this besides copying the tracks from your pc on to the PB and then transferring to the pod.

btw where do you add new songs to the PB or your PC, because the ipod can only be associated (for auto updates) to one computer at a time. You might be able to manually add songs from the non associated computer. But across platforms i have no idea. mac would be able to read a pc formated ipod but not sure how well it works in itunes.

looks like you're gonna have to make the trek down the stairs :(

I assume you are at school and want to get other people's music.... well either or not this legal it can be done...... search google.......

Okay, well if they're on a file server and you want to sync your iPod too, you're better off using regular file sharing rather than iTunes.

You'll want to check your iTunes prefs in the advanced section, see the stuff about copying songs into iTunes and keeping the folder organized. You might want to turn those off if you'd rather just keep the files on the server.

For the lecturers, the DRM stuff shouldn't be a problem here. If the songs are playing through a shared iTunes library, then the downstairs computer is authorized to play those songs.

Hi, new here. Found this thread when trying to do something very similar. Hope I'm not missing the point and that this is not too late to be of use :)

GF has iTunes on G3 iMac but no FireWire. My G3 iMac does have FW. The Macs are on a wifi network. She wanted to update her G1 iPod (used to do it on her brother's G4 iMac). We switched on Share My Music in her iTunes and Look For Shared Music in mine. I could now see her music and and play it streamed from her iTunes but could not get the iPod to "see" it. Solution was to use File > Add To Library in my iTunes. This does not copy the music, just updates the local library. The iPod then saw her music and downloaded it.

Although you're using a PC as the iTunes server, it seems that your case is logically the same.

HTH
:)

I came home the other day, and noticed that my neighbor's entire IPOD collection was "shared" on our wireless network. He's got 9,000 songs and I've got about 8,000. We'd like to swap over our network. I can play and view his music and vice versa, but cannot copy it to my computer or Ipod. Is this possible? Does anyone know a program like SharePod that overrides Itunes security features?

If you are LANned up to this drive do this:
1: Uncheck "Keep itunes Music folder organized" and "copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library" under the "advanced" tab
2: do file>add to library
3: find (on the network) the uppermost folder with your music in it (on a mac user>music>itunes>itunes music) select it, and press "add"
4: Wait - it will take a while to add a lot of tracks
5: Voila - your music should now be able to transfer to iPod (i think)

Hope this works/helps! :D

Unfortunately, we share nothing more than a Wireless Network. We are in apartments next to each other and split the internet bill but do not have any other interaction in terms of networking/file sharing. I happened to have the detect shared music on, and saw his stuff on there, and asked him if he wanted to swap. He doesn't know how to do it, and I'm trying to figure it out short of physically taking his Ipod and copying it onto my computer and vice versa.

My suggestion is to share the music library on your PC with the windows file sharing protocol, which is Samba, I think. Then, on your power book, navigate to this shared folder using Go-->Connect to Server. From this folder, drag the desired music onto your iPod in iTunes. You could also just add the shared library to the iTunes libraries on your laptops, but my experience has been that this is too slow. The transfer rate of my method probably isn't any faster, but since you are only adding the files as needed to your iPod, you don't have to wait as long as you would trying to load up your entire library in iTunes.

I am also trying to figure out how to copy my library from my pc to my laptop.
Here is what Ive figured out so far:
-Ive connected and am sharing an internet connection with my home windows desktop
-I am able to listen to my music library in itunes on my laptop only when itunes is opened on my desktop

I would like to move my entire iTunes library from my desktop to my laptop or at least copy it to itunes on my laptop so I don't need to open iTunes on my desktop every time I want to listen to music on my laptop.
Any advice?
I have been reading and following the instructions outlined in:
http://guides.macrumors.com/Copying_Music_from_your_old_PC_to_new_Mac
but I've hit a snag in the process.
My laptop is connected to the wireless network but is not seen on my "workgroup computers" on my windows desktop. ->Not sure if I need to be part of the "workgroup" if i am already able to share my iTunes folder with my laptop.

What I think I need to do is set up my mac laptop to my desktop network. However I have two problems:
1) no username/password for windows desktop (I did not set up the wireless network, and no one in my home knows what the password or usernames is)->*cannot complete step 15 in above site instructions.
2) unsure if I need to install a new program on my laptop in order to be able to join the "workgroup"

If i can already listen to iTunes on my laptop by file sharing with my desktop, does that mean I'm already connected to the "workgroup"? or does the "workgroup" not even apply?
If so, I have tried setting up a network by using "Network setup Wizard" on my desktop and at the end of the process it prompts me to use it on all the computers in the network. Since this is a Windows program, is it OK to be used on my mac laptop?

(Slightly exhaustive I know, I'm sorry. But I hope my problem is detailed enough to understand)
thanks in advance to everyone!:)
