Got a new iPad Air 13 today, it’s actually my first iPad and will replace my m1 MBA.

I like to keep my message history, and I do not use iCloud.
How can I get the historical messages from either my iPhone or the Mac onto my iPad?
I could copy them from Mac to Mac thru Finder but not sure one can do that with iPadOS…

A google search showed that I might be able to do that with imazing…

Any suggestions are welcomed!

There are after-market apps that do this (of which you are aware).

But, why would you not want to use the free, in-built Messages Sync in iCloud?

Doesn’t messages sync mean that all messages are also stored in icloud? My messages take up over 20GB and I do not want to pay for iCloud space

I understand . . . my Messages fill ~189GB in my USD10/mo iCloud.

Yet, you're willing to pay for alternative software?!?

Why not up your Sub to 2TB, sync, then down-grade?

About a decade-ago, I was besotted with a woman. We fell-out. I found some software that enabled me to do things with various iMessage streams. I did silly things. With weird software.

Now that I think about it, I still do silly things with weird software ;)

For ~$1 a month (50 GB) the convenience of having your messages automatically available on all of your devices would seem to be to be worth it. You can do things manually but it raises the possibility of a disasterous data loss.

my goal was to have all messages on the iPad, but I have those on both my iPhone and on my Mac ...

thing with iCloud messaging syncing is that only the most recent messages are downloaded, all "old" ones are in cloud.

And after I looked at imazing pricing, I had a bit of a sticker shock so that route seems not the best one, certainly not for a one time exercise.

So, I'll live with "only" messages going forward on the iPad, not going to pay for iCloud to have that feature

I've got a Shiite Muslim's worth of Messages available to me in all my iMessage text-streams; all of which date-back to first sent my very-first iMessage (as uncomfortable as some of them may be (iMessage !== Time Machine, unfortunately)).

If you've taken the Wisdom of "Give it time" wrt: message-sync, it may be there is some other factor preventing you from availing yourself of the entirety?

What iCloud plan do you have?

By the time iCloud Message Sync became a thing (iOS 11 or 12?), we were on the 200GB plan. I expect syncing would’ve been fine even on the lowest plan (provided storage was enough).

We switched to the 2TB plan last month, though, as we needed more storage.

Thanks. I’m still on the “free” plan (5 GB) as all I sync is health data, contacts, Notes and passwords.
dont relly want to pay for iCloud…
