Copying Audio CDs

I just bought a new G5 with Panther. I don't have any software like Toast. Is there any way to just directly copy a cd to another?

I have cds I want to make for friends, and I dont want to burn the tracks and make cds, I want direct copies.

Is that possible with iTunes or any other program, or do I need to go get Toast or something?

That's easy. Given that you have a blank CD-RW disk available and a CD-RW drive...

Make a New Folder on your Desktop and call it "Contents." Insert the original CD, and drag all of the CD items into the Contents folder so that they are copied there. Eject the CD. Now, insert your new CD-RW (blank) disk. You'll see a Finder pop-up window asking you what you want to do with it. (I can't recall the options directly...) Select the option that allows you to use the blank disk in the Finder as data (might be called "Open in Finder"). A blank disk image will appear on your desktop. Drag all the items from the Contents folder into the blank CD-RW disk image. Then drag the CD image to the Trash; the Trash icon will change into an Eject icon, but don't let that fool you. Finder will ask you do either Burn the CD or eject it. Select Burn. <-- That process may take a while, depending on the amount of data you burn, speeds of drive, etc. And Finder will verify your disk burn.

Now, I know I said it's easy...and it is given that you visualize all the steps and not focus on the length of the above paragraph.

King isn't there also a "disk copy" utility included with Panther? I'm just getting used to jaguar at home and 2 weeks ago put Panther on our G3 at work. This one I have used on Jaguar "Picture 1" I got Toast bundled with the LaCie DVD-R CD-R burner I just got and its really nice, but if you don't have..... see if you can download the "light" version of it. it still works great.

You could probably create an image of the CD in Disk Utility, and then burn that. I've never done it but it would probably work. You could certainly rip to iTunes as aiff and burn an audio CD. Disk Utility would probably be faster.

Yeah, but I hardly ever use it (by force of habit, I suppose). I have Toast for disk copying purposes and Stuffit Deluxe for [re]packaging purposes, thus my habit to leave Disk Copy pretty much untouched. You'll prob. want to do a search at www.info.apple.com as to how to make copies of disks using those programs if you get stuck.

Unless you use disk copy you will not always get an exact copy of the original there are often hidden files on these disks. Also with an audio cd you have to use a program like iTunes, Disk Copy, or Toast.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. But I'm still having a bit of trouble. I tried the first two examples, and all I was left with were two discs that could only be played on computers.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong, but they don't give me audio cds that can be played in a common cd player.

Okay. I followed the instructions from the site. When I get to step 4, that's when I can't continue. When I click Images --> New --> all it gives me are three options (Blank Image, Image from Folder, and Image from (Select a Device)). That last option, however, is gray, and I can't choose it. I'm guessing that's what I'm supposed to be doing.

Any ideas?

well I can think of two possibilities; either you didn't first highlight the CD on the left-hand column (under the hard drive icon and name), or the CD is copy-protected. it could be something else but that's what I've come up with.

Yeah, it's definitely not a copy-protection issue. I've tried it on numerous discs, still nothing. There's something that's just not working.

I wish I had the answer to this problem. but since you just got your G5, you're within your 90 days of free Apple Care phone support, which covers the hardware and the system software (the OS and all the preinstalled apps including the iLife suite). call them and tell them that Disk Utility isn't working properly for creating disk images, and specifically reference the knowledge base article too (by article #). it might take 45 minutes to an hour, but they'll work with you until things work properly.
