Copying Virtual PC's

Hi folks,

I am running VPC6 and I remember in old versions I could backup / copy the PC file from my PC list to DVD and take it to another machine running VPC and recrerating it.

I don't seem to be able to do this on 6. If I choose the option to create a PC using an existing VPC image, the ones in my PC list are dimmed.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

This can be done without using VPC - I did this to back up my VPC drive image (before I had a DVD burner). Here's the process I used: I went into the folder where my VPC drive image is stored (the location can be found from within VPC; I know the default is a Virtual PC something folder in your Documents folder in your user folder), created a disk image of its contents, and copied the disk image file to a series of CDs (unless you have a large VPC image, it should fit on one DVD), then burned the disc(s). When I needed to restore the backup. I simply retrieved the disc(s) that the image was stored on, reassembled the disk image if I split it so it would fit, mounted the disk image, then copied the file inside it to whatever location is set as the location VPC uses for finding these files (mine was set to the default, but yours might not be). After launching VPC, it found the drive image I had copied and used it perfectly. I don't use VPC anymore, but I did have VPC 6 when I did use it, so these instructions should still apply.

I have done something very similar to this using VPC 6, and it also worked just fine. After you put the drive image in the proper folder (Virtual PC List, I believe) and restart VPC, it will see the drive and you will be able to use it.
