I need sound effects for my app. So i searched Google for any kind of copyright-free sounds. I found something named royalty-free sounds which are sounds that you are free to use, But you are not allowed to sell the sounds. Since I'm making an app that costs .99 would that be like selling the sounds or not?

Also where do you guys get your sounds/sound effects... from.

All of the royalty-free stuff I have come across are free, so long as you don't use them on a commercial basis. That is, sell them on, which would include your shiny app. The legal way is you contact a sound effects resource and license the ones you want for a one off payment or part payment based on unit sales.

Or you record your own!

What if i want to make a gun sound

What, you don't have access to a gun?

Seriously, soundfield creation is one of the most fun parts of this whole enterprise. And digital sound recording equipment is dirt cheap these days. Heck, you could even use an iPhone, in a pinch.

I kinda live in Denmark and I'm only 14

I've also used sounds from www.freesound.org. Their license basically just requires a note about the source of the sound.

You'll find gunshot sounds at all the sites mentioned in this thread. Decide which license works best for you and pick some sounds.

Royalty-free means that you don't pay for the sounds based on how many you distribute. A royalty payment would be if you had to pay a fee, the royalty, of say $1 for each copy that you distributed.

I don't think you will find copyright-free sounds. The sounds are copyright by whoever made them but they will license to you the right to use them in your work, like a software game or other application.

Each of the sites mentioned in this thread has different license terms. Some are simple commercial terms. You get the right to distribute the sound as part of your game in exchange for the license fee that you pay. You don't get the right to distribute the sound as a sound effect. What I mean is you can't sell the sound as part of a CD of sound effects, or a similar web site.

If you are selling your app for 0.99 then it is commercial use, which some of the licenses may treat different than giving away the product.
