Core Duo versus the current crop of Intel Desktop Processors

I have been scouring the net looking for info and benchmarks on the Core Duo. Of course all comparisons are generally against the Pentium M.

Has anyone seen benchmarks with it compared to intel desktop processors?

Unless I am mistaken this is telling me that the 1.83 Duo is faster than any pentium 4. Are they saying with confidence that the MBP will has more grunt than 90% (guesstimate) of home PCs?

Yes.

The P4 is not a particularly amazing chip. Look at the way AMD have kicked Intel all over the place on the home desktop over the past 18 months. The P4 design was a break from previous approaches. It enabled stonkingly high clock speeds... but at the cost of diminishing returns and skyrocketing power consumption and heat production.

Meanwhile, Intel's Israel-based designers came up with the Pentium M (aka Centrino). This follows a similar design paradigm to the Pentium III, and uses better design in place of raw GHz to get the job done (I'm simplifying here, but hopefully it gets the point across!).

2006 will see the gradual death of the Pentium 4. It was a mis-step that let AMD take the speed and efficiency crown. The Yonah dual-cores, aka Core Duo processors are the next generation of the Pentium M/Centrino design. Very nice processors really -- bear in mind that they're faster than the P4's and yet use a fraction of the power and approx. half the clock speed.

I admit I have to smirk a bit when people slate Apple for 'only' using the 1.6/1.8 Yonahs instead of the 2.0's. These things are so quick I doubt you'd notice much the 400/200MHz difference unless you were doing specific tasks and had a stopwatch handy.
