I'm very close to buying a macbook from the refurb store, but it's only a core duo rather than core 2 duo. Will this make much of a difference? I'm going to be using it for general office type tasks, internet and e-mail and teaching myself FCP. I wont be editing any major stuff, it's just to learn the system.

The Macbook should be heaps fine, as long as FCP is just for teaching yourself and not something your going to use regularly and like a professional. Also if your just working with DV it should be fine - HD on the other hand...
...CPU intensive apps definitely get a boost from the Core 2 Duo update of the 13" MacBook...

HDV Will Work Fine On A C2D MacBook As Well
It could be used professionally as well as just to teach yourself. It's up to you not some marketing pigeon holler.
It will handle HDV just as well as an iMac or a MBP. Only advanced - not basic - Motion work could be a problem due to the IG. We have had a ton of reports of all parts of FCS working great on the MacBook save the tight screen real estate.

I have had both, the 2 seems faster and seems like the speakers are better and the built feels more aligned.

What are the heat issues you mentioned Habusho?

Just that you can burn your freakin lap with an old CD MBP running a cpu intensive app.
The new models don't get very hot.

You'll Want 2GB RAM For FCS
You need to take into consideration that you are going to want 2GB of RAM inside MINIMUM 1GB to run Final Cut Studio applications. So the one I suggest already has 1GB included and you can add only 1 stick to get it to 1.5GB vs. 1.25GB from the weaker one you suggest. You aren't going to want to run Final Cut applications with only .5GB of RAM.
HUH, were you over reacted? Computer is for ppl to use, absolute difference means nothing for a certain user, why? coz they don't need it. coz different ppl have difference usage and concerns when purchasing a computer. always remember not everybody go to a computer store and buy top of the line.
No, you can't. DVI->VGA adapters won't fit on the end of Apple's Mini-DVI->DVI converters because they output DVI-I and a DVI->VGA adapter requires DVI-D. You have to buy the right Apple adapter for your monitor.
I have been using a core duo macbook for a few weeks now and all i can say is wow. It works great. Not a single problem. If you look around you can still get a great deal one as they have long since been discontinued. I got a blackbook for my girlfriend for 800 + tax and a white 2.0 ghz with 3-yr applecare for myself for 1000 no tax. I was really concerned about getting a core duo macbook but after using my girlfriend blackbook for a while i felt much better and ordered my own. just wish they still had a few more blackbooks.
Although i have never owned a Macbook i have owned a 2.0ghz CD MBP and a C2D 2.33ghz MBP and i didn't really notice any kind of difference between those two models. I didn't just test out these models at the Apple store or something. I used and owned both of these models at the same time for several months. I have now sold the C2D MBP though and will maybe sell the CD as well to be ready when Apple release whatever they do next lol.

you got that backwards, the Mini DVI > DVI adaptor is DVI-D and a VGA adaptor is DVI-I

I got those mixed up...but you still can't use a DVI > VGA adapter with the Apple adapter.
