Hey all:

So every year since 2003 I go to QuakeCon and compete in the case mod competition. Typically, every year I have placed top 5 with the past three years 2-2-3, respectively. Its always a lot of fun, and I usually win enough cash to break even on the computer. Ever since I dumped the PC laptop for a MacBook about 5 years ago now, I haven't really used the PC for much other than gaming, and due to law school, I don't have time for much of that anymore.

This upcoming year I'm wanting to do a case mod with a MacPro. I have absolutely no interest in doing a hackintosh as the back end of the Pros tend to get butchered beyond repair. So, here is my thought, I've got about $1500, $1750 tops to spend on the MacPro its-self with another $1000 set aside for the mod, and another ~$750 set aside for more ram, graphics card, and SSD. I don't need some 12 core monster, but getting a dual 2.66 MP 1,1 doesn't seem too appealing either. My big hangup is I down want to feel a slow down from what I currently have -

Current specs . . . .

i7 920 @ 4.1Ghz
HD 4890
12 Gb DDR3
2x WD Raptor X's in Raid 0.

So I guess all that being said, what kinda MacPro could I get for $1500 - $1750 within the next 2-3 weeks?

Thanks!

Edit -->

Worth it to spend the extra $250 to do the single Nehalem refurb. off the Apple store?

Do you have a Core i7 or a Core 2 Duo.

I'd get a single CPU Nahelem refurb.

I'm sorry an i7. That is embarassing. :(

Why is it that the Nahelem refurb is on the Apple store (Apple prices) for $2k, but they don't go on ebay south of $2k.

Any ideas?

The refurbished store is unknown to many and it is often lacking models which means there are buyers on eBay and there is demand.

$200 for 24GB?

Is that for real or scam? To be honest, it just sounds to good to be true.

Yeah, sounds too cheap. It works out to be 36$ per module and 4GB ECC modules are at least ~60$ from elsewhere. If this is real, soon it will be cheaper to buy RAM than SSDs :p

Looking at this page it seems like a typo.

3x4GB goes for $219 and 6x4GB for $217. Doesn't sound right. :p

If someone from the US ordered this and got 24GB delivered, let me know. I can even sell my existing 12GB for more than that. :p
