I've been looking into Corel Painter and was wondering if it's suggest worthy, aka good for what it does? Been looking for something slightly less messy than traditional paints ;-)

Yes! I love it! It is a great program.
You can always download the trial if your not sure.
Or you can buy the Corel Painter magazine at a newsstand. It usually includes a trial, plus the magazine is phenomenal. The mag is expensive for a mag though, but it is totally worth it for someone interested in Corel Painter!

Yeah, I've also been looking for good art magazines to subscribe to. I had a couple free trials of Print in college and was looking something more "painterly" based.
I need to get a good wacom though, I guess time to save up :-D
Yes, you Need a tablet, if you want to make the most out of Painter. It will not be the same without one.
Just get a cheap Graphire, even used to get you started.
Or you can get the bundle deal that Corel offers - the bundle includes a Wacom and Painter. It used to be a super awesome deal. I haven't checked in awhile, but it had gone up a little, but it still was a fantastic deal.
If you like Print, you would probably like How, too.

I buy the Corel Painter Official Magazine which has some great stuff in it and like most magazines a pretty good cd although it is pricey.

Here is the low risk why to check it out. Buy a Wacom graphic tablet. The little "bamboo fun" tablet is only $100 and it comes bundled with Corel "Painter Essentials". "Essentials" is almost as good as the full Painter product. You can try it out and it may be enough or you may want to upgrade. If you do decide to upgrade Corel gives you a good discount that more than pays for the "essentials" product if you do the upgrade from the wacom.com site. Or if you already know you want to full Painter still do the upgrade route so you get to pick up a tablet in the process.
You do need a tablet. At first yes, you will be better with a mouse only because you have much experience with it. but after a week or two with the pen you will be much better with the pen. There will be a learning curve with a pen while your hand/eye/brain learns a new skill but stick with it.
If you are used to real media, using real brushes and ink. Then buy the higher-end Wacon Intuois (SP?) tablet. All tablets are sensitive to pressure but the more expensive tablet can sense the pen's tilt and rotation. The simple tablet is good enough for photography

Oh I had a Graphire for a couple of years, but sold it as I didn't do much with it (too limited to do any drawing IMO). So I was thinking of an Intuos. I originally wanted a Modbook, but I doubt I'll have any sort of funds for that ANY time within the next couple of years :-/

I'm ultra-disciplined about how I organize my system and life
in general. For example, I absolutely insist each ceiling corner
gets a maximum of 1 spider.

It installs the same way Photoshop does, creates a folder with more files in oher system folders. A trial wont tell you anything if you dont have a tablet, its completely useless without one.
