So my friend's 4th gen ipod died a couple of years ago and now it suddenly works again. It plays music just fine but when I tried to plug it into my PC to copy over the music files and data, itunes tells me the ipod may be corrupted and needs to be restored. My PC also can't open up the removable disk file. Is it possible that while music plays fine the hard drive has been damaged and won't connect properly to my computer? Is there any way I can get the files off the Ipod? I have a Mac and a PC so any method would be appreciated.

Anyone? I've tried a bunch of things but nothing helps. I really don't want to do a restore and lose the music and data.
