As it says on the tin....do they go wrong enough to warrant paying out the additional sum for the extended warranty?

The simple answer to this question is, if it goes wrong it is totally worth the money. If you have it for three years and nothing goes wrong it was a complete waste of money. In short you are taking a gamble either way. Most will never use their Apple Care. I bought simply because I knew that I couldn't afford a new one if it broke after one year. So for me just peace of mind.

IMHO, Ditzy's response is a good one; statistics are hard to come by, but it does seem to be the case that most people will not use their applecare.....but if the potential cost of repairing or replacing a computer is going to be a significant financial burden, then getting applecare is a reasonable thing to do

Yes!

My answer would be a resounding yes.

In my experience the superdrives and displays have the main issues with reliability on the iMac. And if its a display problems, Applecare is cheaper to buy than a replacment panel.

The way I look at it is do you mind paying (out of pocket) to repair or replace your new computer during years 2 and 3.

For example when I bought a mini several years ago I didn't buy Apple Care and went with just the standard one year warranty.

Then this year I got Apple Care for my 24 inch iMac. I feel there is much more risk with a higher end system that includes a large LCD.

By the way shop around and you can get a decent price for AC. I paid $119 for the extra two years.

To be perfectly honest in all the years I've owned pc's and laptops.....not once have I ever had to have them repaired. Nor monitors...we have just upgraded both over the years but certainly not before they were a minimum of 4 years old and always managed to sell on the older models to friends/family...a risk in itself :D.

I am seriously now beginning to doubt the decision to buy this iMac..there seems to be a lot of reliability issues that I didn't find out about before ordering....or is it just that all the people with problems end up on this forum??? ;):) so it just seems that way....

My recommendation: Keep your Mac for eleven month and see what happens. Some Macs are better than others, some people treat them better than others. If everything is fine after eleven months, I would not buy extended warranty. If you had problems within the first eleven months, get the warranty.

Just my 2 cents

Good for you for deciding to get the imac. Trust me, you won't regret having done so. Regarding the AppleCare, I have it for all Apple computers in my family and I think it is totally worth it. I have scratched, dropped, broken, and accidentally smashed my macbook pro and because of my charm and the fact that I had applecare, I was able to take care of all of these problems without having to pay a dime out of my own pocket. I originally paid just over 200 for AppleCare but considering all of the repairs on my computer, I have saved over $600 dollars by deciding to get AppleCare! I have no idea whether I might need it for the iMac or other two macbooks in my family, but with the experiences I've had, it's definitely worth it.

Ok thought this point was good enough to warrant a call to Apple....How efficient after 3 hours from initial order on a Saturday I could not cancel as it was prepared for shipment!!!
Now I was working along the lines that 'most' extended warranties 'have' to be taken out at initial order so just wanted to check it was possible to purchase right up to the first years cover. Correct!! However the advisor did say that if I left it active my initial 90 day free phone support would be extended to the full 3 years.....so on this basis I think I may leave it active although still have the option to return within 14 days once it arrives.
I'm going to guess though that any 'accident' ie knocking over/dropping etc would in point of fact be covered by my household contents policy under accidental damage....so the Applecare would only be of any use to me if the iMac had any technical faults or breakdown. Ho hum
