cost vs new MBP

I am replying under the assumption that by "institutional discount", you mean "educational discount".
I think that the MBA is not targetted towards the student population, and more towards the business/professional oriented people. Hence, the amount of discount is not that great for students.
On the other hand, MBP is definitely a great machine satisfying students needs, and as a result there is a higher amount of discount.
I meant the students who cannot afford to own more than one machine- and I believe majority falls in that category.
This whole two machine for students jazz is garbage (kinda).
Well i guess it does depend on what type of student you are...
I am a medical student and the MBA fits all of my needs (email/research/chatting/iphoto/MSoffice).
Majority of students (med/law/dent/most undergrads) would use only those functions and would have no need for a second machine.

I am an engineering student, and I need to run Microwave Office, Maple 11, MATLAB, Metroweks CodeWarrior, Cadence PSPICE, and AutoCAD on a regular basis.
Most of the files associated with the above mentioned programs take up a lot of resources.
An adequately powered single machine would be enough to get the job done. But if a student chooses to get a MBA, I highly doubt that it will be able to provide enough juice to handle all of the mentioned software. As a result, they will need an extra machine- or at least an external HDD, defeating the purpose of getting a MBA.
Therefore, I do not believe that the whole two machine for students jazz is "garbage".
Please do note that these are my own opinions which could differ from consensus.
MBA is perfect for students. Most students don't use resource eating programs unless they are computer majors. MBP is overkill imo for students.

well as a history phd student, I use my 2.4 mbp and it isn't nearly enough. I am tired of iMovie 08's limitations with my documentaries I have to edit and publish as part of the fellowship and my own research grants.
What I am looking at doing is getting an Air as my travel computer and possibly get an iMac for my graphics and music work. My only problem then is recording seminars and lectures which take up 500mb each file from wavepro, given yes I can convert to AAC in itunes and shrink down to 100 sure but will the air be able to do this sound recording and typing in Pages well enough and with adequate battery power? My 2.4 gets 3-5 hours life with the 320gb WD hd and 4 gig ram. I am very concerned with how well the life will be for the MB Air. So any thoughts on this would be much appreciated, thanks guys
