Could somenone with a new mini w 4gb of ram do me a favour?

I finally got to the Apple store and spent a good 20 min playing with one of the new mini's. Beautiful machine but I did find that apps took longer than expected to open. I'm assuming this is because the mini was the stock setup without maxed out ram. However, one thing really troubled me: I went to the Apple Trailers page and opened some 1080P clips, and each of them got weird with images that faded to black, or faded up from black. A horizontal line would flash during virtually any fade and even on some tight cuts where contrasts shifted abruptly. The Imacs in the store showed none of this problem whatsoever on the same clips.

Could someone here who's got a new mini fitted with 4gb of ram try playing the 1080P version of the SLEEP DEALER trailer (this one was easily the most difficult on the mini - but againm the Imac played it effortlessly) and let me know if it plays without any weird issues? http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/sleepdealer

Watched that clip a couple times after letting it load all the way and I didn't find any of the issues you mentioned.

I'm running a 2.0ghz mini with 4GB ram.

WICKED! Thanks! Did you notice any issues that I *didn't* mention or was it all smooth?

Also, with 4 gigs of ram, do you find that apps open quickly?

You have no idea how relieved I am that I can get this machine instead of an Imac!

My mini is the base $599 model with the 4GB ram and the 120GB 5400 rpms stock hard drive.

no errors you didn't mention either on the video. played perfectly clear and smooth.

Apps definitely run more smoothly compared to when I had it stock with 1GB or the 2GB model I tried in the store. For your first app they pretty much all open quick depending on what the app is you're running (anything stock on the mac will be fine), but you definitely notice the quickness when trying to multi task or open many apps. When I had the 1GB I was getting a little lag not bad but there with just safari(itunes), itunes playing music, mail and another app I don't remember maybe iphoto.

Right now I'm running safari, photoshop, netnewswire, lightroom and have that video opened and it's running fine. All opened quick as well.

My last mac was a black macbook 2.16ghz with 2gb ram. I'm way more happy with the mini. In addition to being able to meet all my needs it's also very quite. To date I haven't heard the fans other then putting my ear practically on it. The macbook sounded like it was going to fly away at times. My last imac (last ppc one) was the same way. In a apple store or office with noise you'd probably never notice but if using late or in a quite place you'd definitely hear it.

Definitely don't regret the purchase. Once I pick up my firewire adapter I'll be able to do my last test which is video.

I find the iMac to be good (display a bit yellow(y) iMac thing), but I think the 24ACD would be even better for photo editing, not? Realizing that, I would then need to go with a mini as a Mac Pro is way to expensive.
What would you guys suggest? Keep the iMac or get an 24ACD and a mini 2,26 with 4gb and 7200RPM 500GB HDD?

Does the mini keep up with an iMac 2,93 in LightRoom? My current MBP 2,33 doesn't, but that's almost three years old.

buy it now and put $1 a day away until snow leopard comes out, it will probably take that long.

Just cruising through and thought I would comment on this. There is definitely something wrong with the mini you used at the store. I just got a brand new base model today (2.0ghz, 1gb ram). I haven't even upgraded the ram yet and your Sleep Dealer trailer plays perfectly @ 1080p. I'm also running at 1920x1200, something that should tax the gpu even further. As a comparison, I also played it on the same monitor with my quadcore q6600, 4gb ram, 8800gt Vista PC. Plays exactly the same, even has about the same processor usage despite the core differences.

Go back to the store and tell them they could sell more minis if they had a properly working one on display

The 24" ACD and the 24" iMac use the same IPS panel, with the difference on the ACD being that it has LED backlighting. The only other real difference is that the 24" ACD has better speakers (2.1) and has the charging port for the Macbook.

I've compared them in store for very long periods of time and I actually think that the picture from the 24" iMac is slightly better than the LED backlit one.

If you look at the $900 cost of a 24" ACD + the $600 of a Mac Mini + the $150 to upgrade the Mini to a reasonably quick hard drive as well as 4GB of RAM you are looking at $1650.

You can get a pretty nice iMac for $1650 and get better video in it as well as a few other extras for not much more.

If Apple hadn't had their heads up their arses and had put a 2nd DVI input on the ACD then it might have made it a more difficult choice between the two.

Oke... wow. I think the display with the glass on the iMac is wonderful, but this gradient issue (not always noticeable) is some sort of a downer. Apart from that my photos never seen so bright, colorfull and sharp it is amazig. I'll stick with the iMac.

Something else, saw the thread on disassembling heatsink from iMac and there it stated that the CPU is socketed. Could this mean (do not know if nvidia chipset will support this) that at the end of the year maybe a quad intel proc can be installed? That would be yummie.... ;-)
