Friend designed it...so apparantly has the original file and all...and you can't ask him or her to make the changes?
You will have much better luck making the changes to the original file, which I'm sure has all the seperate layers. You are also asking for us to edit a GIF file when the original, I'm pretty sure, is going to be in some vector-based format.
It's just weird that you are asking anonymous people here to make adjustments to someone else's work who did this work
specifically for you. Any designer worth his or her salt won't hand over a completed logo unless the customer is absolutely happy with it. It's not their job to throw together one version of a few letters in B&W and let you mess around with coloring and shading for alternate applications. Usually, you will get multiple sizes and colors and styles of the logo to choose from and to use in various applications.
