iPad Pro Could the Magic Keyboard USB port ever transfer data?

Is the limitation of this port (charging only) a hardware issue or a software issue? Could it ever be configured by Apple in a future update to transfer data?

I believe it is a hardware issue due to the fact it uses only 3 pins to interface with the iPad. USB Data uses 4+ pins.
