So Cal, USA
I keep getting this message when trying to encrypt an external drive. I've tried two different drives - an SSD with my Time Machine backup on it as well as a standard HDD with no contents. Both are formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Tried encrypting from Finder, Disk Utility and Time Machine backup option for encryption checked. Same error trying it from all 3 methods.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Am I doing something wrong?

TIA

This can indicate a hardware problem. Have you tried different USB ports?

FileVault works? Have you tried this from another partition, such as Recovery?

Not sure if FileVault works. Does it need to be enabled for me to to this? I'm a little reluctant to enable FV because I have BootCamp set up with Win10 and not sure if it will cause any issues.

I haven't tried from the Recov partition, I'll give that a shot as well.

No, it doesn’t. I was just curious whether that worked, to rule out any problems with the system installation. But that should equally be testable from another system partition.

Well, it works from the Recovery partition using Disk Utility and when booted back into Mac HD it prompts me for a password and it's showing Journaled & Encrypted using Get Info. So I guess this is a good workaround, at least for now.

Thanks for the tips...:)
