First i was looking for a diagnostic test that i could run to determine if there is any problem with user installed, third party, ram and HD.

And the second thing was sometimes there is a red light where the headphone jack is, and sometimes not. I thought this was a feature so you could see it in the dark, but it doesn't always come on. Are there certain situations in which it comes on?

The DVD that came with your MacBook can be booted to run a hardware test.

The "red light" is the optical digital sound output. It's not to let you see it in the dark!
