When using GPS is the data plan required i presume, otherwise it will go off WiFi?

Does the built in Maps application handle the GPS well?
I plan on taking a trip from Chicago to North Carolina in the next month so hope to have it as a back up in case my other gps doesnt work out or jsut wanna resort to the iPad specifically.

ps any recommended car chargers for the iPad?

thanks!

Maps app data is dowloaded on the fly, so there would be some data usage, yes. Its not turn by turn, so really not a lot of use while driving. Ok for reference when you stop though.

If you have a turn by turn satnav app then there would be no data usage as their maps are built into the application.

Car chargers... not sure. It needs more power than most car USB adapters will give at the moment.

NO. All GPS functions work WITHOUT activating any 3G plan or having a tethered 3G connection. As long as the GPS APP allows you to download the maps to the ipad you are good to go.

I've tested my belkin chargers, one sits flush in the lighter he other sticks out. Both charge the ipad a little faster than an iPhone charge and slower than the ipad charger. Once navigon is running it hold the battery level and downt really charge as such.

Tomtom navigon etc all have the maps included so you can turn cellular data off for your trip.

Just keep in mind that the wifi model do not have

the GPS chip so there is NO turn by turn app for it (you can run the software but it will not show your true place).

The MapQuest app has turn by turn with voice navigation. It's free. However, it is an iPhone app. Maybe they will make it an iPad app later so it will look better.

If your looking for extra juice or the abililty to use it with a car charger look at HyperMac external batteries. The upper end models have adapters as well.
