Just recently bought an iMac
Having previously been a windows user, I'm still getting used to the OS
I have a couple of questions.

1) I have a large photo collection, and on my windows computer, it was possible to change the look of the folders, to preview the pictures before you open the folder... can you do this with macs?

2) Is there a shortcut, or a button that minimizes ALL programs at once, and brings you to the desktop? similar to 'show desktop' on windows

3) Is there any program I can download, which is similar to MS paint?

Thanks :)

You can also try the free Sketch Book Express from Autodesk... it's kind of paint like.

1. I don't think so, but you don't really need that because if you hold down space bar while clicking on a folder it shows the contents.

2.F11

3. There's GIMP and iPhoto is really good at editing photos, a lot better than any windows apps.

For number 3 i use " Paint Brush ". It is very similar to Paint and for a former windows user, like me, it is very easy to use.It have the same functions like in Paint.
For number 1 it is bild in Finder.

You could also have a look at Photoshop Elements - the "home" version of Photoshop. There are some good courses at Lynda.com by Deke McLelland and other authors to help get used to it and I believe registering a copy with Adobe gives you a month's free access to Lynda.com. If you buy your copy of Elements from an official Adobe reseller, you can claim a rebate if you eventually decide to trade up to full Photoshop but it must be an authorised reseller and you need the receipt.

You can change the folder icon/image to anything you want. Copy an image/icon. Right-click or Ctr-click and select get info. Then click on the icon in the top left corner of the 'get info' window. Then edit past a new icon/image.

This is the ebst picture I can find

Is there a way to make the folders look like this?

I dont know any way to make it look like that on Macs, but then again, you have other cool stuff, like cover-flow: http://www.churchtecharts.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/cover-flow.jpg

For painting you could use Sketchbook Express (its free, Sketchbook Pro costs)

I dont think that this is what he meant.

iPhoto is your best bet for your photo collection. Check out the skimming feature for similar (actually better) functionality for folder icon previews on Windows

The keyboard that came with your iMac has a dedicated key for expose. Press the command key and the expose key for instant access to the desktop. You can also drag the expose "app" located in your applications folder to the dock. Right click on the app icon in the dock for a list of expose functions, one of which is show desktop.
