My kids both got a 1st gen Pencil for their iPads. We got them charged up and connected. On one of their screens, there is an icon under the battery icon in the upper right corner, which I was thinking was for the Pencil. Is that what it's for? Does it indicated charge? Any reason the other one doesn't show this?

We tried the Scribble feature in settings, which is pretty cool. Then we tried using Notes but couldn't get the handwriting to convert to text. Can Notes do that? Or do we need a separate app? I use Evernote on my iPhone, would that work?

Also, how long should it take to charge? Had one plugged in for an hour or so, but only went up to 31%, but it was at 0% out of the box, so might take longer when completely drained?

Thanks!

I don’t think there’s an icon - can you share a screenshot from that iPad so our folks can have a look?

Notes I think doesn’t allow scribble to text conversion but other apps have this stuff figured out already. I strongly recommend the Nebo notes app - small price and fantastic handwriting recognition plus good features. The first app that you can watch understand my terrible handwriting on the fly. Other apps probably have something similar in the works too.

Personally, I use Apple Notes more for scribbles and really personal notes like the good old pen & paper - the endless page is just really cool as is dark mode writing white on black. I use Nebo notes for long text entry like journaling, writing a letter kinda things and then share the text as plain text to my iPad app of choice.

Charging time - not sure, but 1-2 hours should suffice to get it mostly charged. In iOS 14 you can have widgets displayed, the battery widget should also show you the pencil charge at a glance.

If you don't mind paying the $9 for Nebo, it is a great app. It does an excellent job with recognition and converting pencil to text. The latest version also allows you to use any wiring instrument. In my opinion, it is worth the money. Apple can't compete with Nebo. I believe it allows sharing and you can save and sync with the cloud if you wish.

What icon are you talking about? I have never seen an icon for the Apple Pencil battery.

In Notes look for the pencil with an A on it which converts handwriting to text.

I will check out Nebo. Looks like we might be able to share it with family. Good to know about the icon in Notes I'll see if that will work

Here's a picture with the icon below with the battery. It seems to be only on the lock screen so don't know it's about:

This is how the batteries widget looks like:

The first one is about the iPad, the second is about the pencil.

Btw my pencil charges fast - no more than 20-30 minutes but it also discharges fast from 100 %. It does not stay long at 100 %. I just lost 15 % from colouring in Procreate for 10 minutes.

What widget is this?

Edit: Nevermind. I just found out it’s the same widget that’s on my device! It’s just that I hadn’t noticed it with the pencil, BT ear buds etc connected!

Apple Pencil 2 shows a quick icon when you connect to compatible iPads for a brief moment. Unsure if this occurs on older iPad Pro’s with Apple Pencil 1??

Here I’m wondering again if this is native to older iPads since I never see a bar indicaor for control center on my iPP.

It does not. At least on 6th gen regular iPad I do not see any indication of the pencil has been paired or is charging. I need to check the battery widget itself to know.

Not sure about this as I have seen this indicator but I don't know how to trigger it.

Apple Pencil 2 (which is what they said) does have a charge indication when you connect it.
