Couple of jailbreak questions iPhone 3G

Will I lose all of my contacts and texts?
This the best guide to follow - http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1881

In that guide the first part is about installing 2.1 firmware, as iam already on 2.1 do I need to skip that part and go straight to step three?

Ive read not to install Kate, but what about cydia, installer? Can you install these after you have jailbreaked your iPhone?

That's odd that you lost all of your contacts and sms. Did you do a complete backup before you jailbroke? and with the sms, if you open up contacts and start a new conversation with someone that you had already been talking too....anyway...is there an option at the top that says something like "load previous sms"? you might be able to retrieve some.

Definitely stay away from Kate and installer..... first hand bad experience with both

He said "Will I lose all my contacts and texts?" not "I lost all of my contacts and texts"
 
if you lost it, right click on your iphone in itunes and click on restore from backup. your phone still JB after backup, but sms and contact will be restore.
 
^^ same here, I mean, I personally don't care about losing SMS because I look at them right away, like "SWEET! I got an SMS!" lol. but contacts- they're on my SIM card so i go into settings and press "Import Contacts from SIM" and BAM! they're right there

there is an amazing number of people who don't sync their iPhones with their computer very often.

contacts are easy to keep safe, but call logs and SMS conversations are easy to lose. 2.1 has helped, but backups can easily get corrupted.

I only wanted to quote one of his comments to answer all of his questions. If you read the previous posts then why did you say:

so you sure you read that post before you commented? Doesn't seem like it.

This is sad, people trying to give advice to help some one who asked a question and then some one else comes out of nowhere to make a comment, not about anything the person is talking about, but instead how the person trying to help "quoted" wrong. Stay classy

No it's not. He probably didn't backup, or restore from backup. That's why he lost it. Nothing odd there at all.

Even if he did, he probably didn't restore from the backup.

Do I even need to respond to this bit of ignorance? If you start a new conversation, there is never a "Load previous messages" button. When there're no conversations, there're no previous messages.

Have you even used an iPhone before?

The only way he'd be able to retrieve text messages is by plugging his iPhone into his computer, right clicking on it in iTunes and selecting "Restore from backup..." but you neglect to mention this to him.

I never said my advice is grade a. Just offering what I thought might help....the whole purpose of these threads. If my advice didn't help him, then hopefully somebody else was able to help him with their above comments

clam down people. The only backup I had made was one from the 29.9 so once I had JB plugged my iPhone in again and restored to that date. So I've lost some contacts and texts. The guide didn't say about doing a backup before you start, still I guess it was my own fault.

Yeah, the tutorial told him to restore first, that is how he lost is contacts and SMSs. :rolleyes:
 
Lost contacts and photos.

Hey heys I have tried jailbreaking my Iphone 3G, and have lost all my photos and contacts. I then tried to do a restore and still not contacts and photos. I sync my phone often and when I did a restore it had only 2 points their. One from last year. Is there anyway to get them back?
