Hey all. Just upgraded my 2018 iPad Pro 11” to an M2 iPad Pro 12.9” and noticed a couple things that are concerning. It’s running iPadOS 16.1.

First is volume buttons. When I have the iPad in portrait mode, the volume buttons act as normal. Up volume button turns the volume up and down volume button turns the volume down. However, when in landscape mode, the volume buttons are reversed. Up volume button turns the volume down and down volume button turns the volume up. Tried a hard reboot and this issue still persists. Also, my 2018 iPad Pro 11” does not behave like this. Is this “feature” or possibly a software or hardware issue? Anyone else seeing this?

Next is the display in dark mode. Looks like I’m getting a lot of light bleed on the display when there is white text on a black background. It gets more noticeable as the screen gets dimmer. Is this a consequence of mini-LED or an actual problem? Please advise while I’m still in my return period. Thanks.

See pic below. I was in a dark bedroom using night mode on an iPhone 14P camera. Wasn’t easy capturing it. This is the Apple Notes app and that vertical line is a grid line (they are very thin and dim) and the horizontal line is the swipe to Home Screen bar. It happens around text and everything that’s white, including that swipe to Home Screen bar which the pic doesn’t clearly depict. The light bleed is very thick and fairly bright (turn your display brightness up for this).

Both are expected behavior. The volume button behavior is software “smarts” applied to this iPad. The “light bleed” you are seeing is called “blooming” and is an artifact of the local dimming display tech used by the current iPad Pro 12.9.

Appreciate the reply. Well that’s good (and bad) to know. Gotta learn new button behavior and that blooming is absolutely awful lol. Did some more playing around with it and it’s extremely bad when viewed at an angle. This is supposed to be an improvement? So much for mini-LED blacker blacks Lol. Oh well, at least I know I don’t have to got through the hassle of returning it as defective. Thank again!

I swear iPadOS 15 came out with the ability to edit what volume buttons do in the notifications blade of settings. This setting appears to be missing from our 2022 and thus forcing us to have backwards volume buttons by default.

I feel the option missing might be a software bug.

After reading rkuo’s post, I followed up with a Google search and did see a few articles from early this year that stated volume button orientation was an option in iPadOS 15. Said the option was under Sound settings unless it was moved to accessibility like everything else these days. You’re not imagining that lol. I never saw the changes either way on my 2018 iPad Pro 11” so never knew it was a thing.

The volume button behaviour makes total sense. In landscape mode it's 100% natural for the left button to be vol-down and the right button to be vol-up, same direction that the virtual slider goes. It's actually screwed with my brain for nearly ten years that you had to press the opposite button. It should have switched from the very first day iPads could do landscape mode.

I completely agree but now it’s gonna screw with my brain since I’ve been accustomed to the other way for so long. It seems weird to me the way it is now but I’m sure that will change with time.
