I recently picked up a 40gb apple tv off of craigslist and I liked it so much that I decided to put this one in my son's room and buy the new one for the living room. One thing that kind of worries me is the temperature that this thing gets. I won't be able to make sure that it always gets put in standby mode so I wanted to know if the heat will have an effect on it in the long term. It's obviously at least a couple years old but I was hoping to get at least another couple years of use out of it before it kicks the can.

Also, while I like the simplicity of the apple remote, I can see this thing getting lost rather quickly. I don't want to go out and buy a expensive harmony remote for his room so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a big and cheap universal remote that can serve the same purpose. That way, I can keep the apple remote in the box and let them abuse the cheap remote. Thanks to anyone who can help!

I really wouldn't worry about forcing it into standby mode--my experience is that it stays hot regardless. My only recommendation regarding the heat is just keep it pretty well ventilated and use it until it breaks. I've seen comments from users of original units that are still going strong and others whose unit died in less than a year (one of ours--thank goodness for Applecare).

You should be able to uses pretty much any programmable remote--no need for a Harmony. I have our DirecTV remotes programmed to also operate our :apple:TVs and they work just fine.

You could use a switchable power strip and just turn it off. That is what I do when I am not using it, since the unite always seems to run hot. Also the new ones will work with netflix, where the old ones are not up to it, and are easily hackable to add more disk space, and usability... As for the remote, if you have an iphone, the remote app works well with the Atv.
