Ok, I read up on the "PwnageTool 3.1.4" and downloaded the program. But before I go through and JB my iPhone 3gS I have a couple questions for fellow iphone users/owners.

(1). Is there a way to "undo" the jb (if I understood it right, I would just have to put my phone in recovery mode and allow itunes to do its magic, but will then also be back at 3.1.2 official apple fireware)

(2). Do I loose the MMS texting (i mean the official one, I understand there is MMS programs that allow for the same thing)

(3). Will I still be allowed to download "official" applications from the App Store?

1. yes, you just connect usb to itunes and click 'restore'
2. your mms will be just fine when you restore to the updated version of iphone os
2. yes

what are you looking for your iphone to do by jb it? maybe we can answer that and see if its worth it to jb your fone.

Do u mean that I will loose the MMS from "official" texting until I update back to the official iphone os or until I update to a custom ipsw file with a tweaked iphone os on it?

(sorry for being such a n00b at this)

you will not lose mms if you jb or if you choose to restore after jb. mms is not going anywhere.

I don't meant to hijack, and indeed I believe my question may be along the same lines, but will we be able to use the same apps we currently have installed on our phones? Also, is there a higher vulnerability to malware with a jb'd phone?

Personally, I would like to be able to multitask apps. That is my main reason for wanting to jb my phone.

you will have to download all new apps again, as when you jb, it restores with a fresh copy. but with the new itunes, you can just throw the apps back easy without going thru the app store.

and all apps on cydia are safe. i have nothing of any malware.

you can use the app 'backgrounder' to multitask i believe.

Backgrounder? Is that a cydia app?

1) Yes, you can still use App Store apps. When you synch your iPhone it will automatically add all your App Store apps back to your iPhone.

2) Well, it will allow you to install third-party apps, but I've never heard of malware for the iPhone. Remember that it uses the same FreeBSD-based OS as Macs do, so it is much more secure. As long as you are careful what repositories you download apps from (All the defaults in Cydia are safe), you should be fine.

Thanks guys!

Last question: my 3GS came with 3.1.2 installed; how do I know if my phone can be jb'd?

If you have a Mac, you can put your phone in DFU mode and check the version of iBoot in System Profiler under Hardware>USB. If it says iBoot 359.3, then you can jailbreak; if it says iBoot 359.3.2, you cannot right now.

Or you can just create a custom firmware and see if Pwnage Tool can pwn your phone.

PT 3.1.4 will jb your fone.

so I'm about to JB

and it says :

Requirements :

iPhone 3G
Mac OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard
iPhone Firmware OS 3.1.2 Download Here
Pwnage Tool Download Here
________________________________

I am already on 3.1.2 (i was originally on 3.0)

anyways.. do I have to re-download the os 3.1.2 again??

i was also reading that it's better to download pwange tool through firefox because safari extracts it..

however, I downloaded it through bit torrent, so do I need to instal safari then download pwnage again?

A lot of your questions can be answer if you actually read this forum's sticky or other guides. If you need to ask such question then you shouldn't be JBing your iphone because you have no clue what you are doing. Please do yourself a favor and go read some guides on the internet before doing anything. Go to iclarified and read.
