hello all, today while i was bored i popped over to AT&T's site and looked up my coverage, with my iPhone 3G sitting in front of me with 5 bars of EDGE. I saw this:
att3gmap-1.jpg

i immediately restarted my phone, no 3G. then i took out and reinstalled my sim, no 3G. reset network settings, no 3G. i went and looked at my parents phones (regular AT&T dumbphones), no 3G.

as you can see, 3G stops a few miles away, and i can occasionally pick up a bar or two, but my phone switches and stays on Edge most of the time, which doesnt bother me much, its 5 bars strong.

so what is this? the 3G towards the top is real and there, i drive through it all the time and pick it up. im covered, but i dont have any 3G. damn the blue!

When I do my area, it says I have 3G at my house and that I am surrounded by 3G for miles.

I have never got 3G at my house.

This isn't exactly accurate and if your at the edge of a 3G network, chances are it may be wrong..

im totally surrounded, i just live in a tiny hole apparently.
oh well, its coming soon, they have to connect it all eventually.
haha

what's the terrain like near you? Living in Colorado, mountains, hills, etc. cause these maps to look spotty and most of the time to be innaccurate. Vertical differences in terrain do affect cell signals.

Also here in Colorado - trees, shrubs, people, cars, small animals, and clouds interfere with getting a good signal. Based on my number of failed calls, that is.

i live 20 miles from the coast.
its all flat land, and not many trees between me and my tower.
i can see it from my window right now.

i guess one day ill wake up, turn on my phone, and itll snap right to 3G.

hey guys, just here to clarify some more.
the red dot is the tower that i can see from my house,
and i know for a fact that theres a tower where the green dot is, because its in my friends backyard and thats her neighborhood.

so i think that my phone picks up the 3G signal from the "green" tower (1-2 bars), while my "red" tower is still only on E (ALWAYS 5 bars), even though it says its 3G.

I see a US Navy Radio station. Must be that due to airwave restrictions, AT&T can't set up adequate network in there. After all, how else can you explain a perfect square of AT&T 3G on that map? Also, take a close look how square the cut off are. Normally a cell tower beams EM waves in a circular radii.
