Why would you put your finger over the front camera/proximity sensor?
It's supposed to work that way. It turns off the screen when you put your phone next to the ear so that you don't push anything with the tear while talking.

While that's the behavior in some cases, like on a call, it's not in many others, like just being on your home screen or using most apps (like Safari, Mail, Messages, etc.).

maybe phone thinks it's been put in a handbag etc and shuts off screen to prevent accidental touches?
Aside from auto-lock type of settings related to that, I don't believe it does something like that automatically.

on one of android forums was few posts similar and was faulty proximity sensor.

Used to do it when using skype on android with one poster.

maybe OP can inform us if a certain app or all the time.
