CPU overheating causing shutdown! HELP!

Hi,

My mid-2007 mac mini2,1 is having CPU overheating problems since the past few weeks.

If I view/play flash content for more than 30-40 minutes, my CPU temp shoots upto 100 centigrades and as result of that, my system shuts down.

If I stop using flash content, the temperature immediately jumps back to a more manageable level (in range of 70 centigrades)

Any idea if this is hardware related?

I have heard that removing the optical drive may help in cooling the CPU. Is that true?

Could be a build up of dust perhaps?

Might be just dust, might be a defective CPU/Logic board.

100C isn't very normal, I've never seen a Mac reach those temps.

would definitely try to clean the fan out with some compressed air, and run SMC fan control to prevent cpu damage until the cause to the problem is solved.

There's a slim possibility that it could be hardware related, but it's much more likely that Flash is simply taxing your CPU/GPU enough to cause the automatic shutdown, which is working as designed to prevent damage. If you're using Safari try installing ClickToFlash plugin or ClickToFlash extension to control when Flash runs.

No. The presence of your optical drive has nothing to do with CPU/GPU temps. Removing it would not remove the load on your CPU/GPU caused by the demands of Flash content.

it will let you set the fans very high 4000 rpm when you watch flash then if the machine overheats then the problem most likely is you need to clean it out fully.

it simply is not as good. I will attach a screen shot of how many fan settings you can do. I am on my mac pro and I programmed it for 6 speeds. if you look at the screen shot you can see i have it on setting 2222 for lite use and quiet sound if you look at the readout on the gray bar and the down screen the program gives a lot of info, I paid 25 and purchased the family set I have it on my 4 macs. It is worth the piece of mind I get with it. It also allows for a really quiet computer when I just type on a forum like now.

IT also looks like he has 2gb ram it looks like he has a version of iMenu instead of iStats . his page outs are crazy 340,000 when compared to page ins 1,200,000 that is a 4 to 1 ratio should be 95 to 5. he has ram issue he needs to bump the ram.

my mac pro has 32gb ram my page ins are 500 mb my page outs are 0 with 32gb ram it is hard to go past the ram and do drive swaps. it also looks like his hdds are full. so when he gets a page out and the cpu leaves the ram and looks for space on the hdd it can't find any. I will go on my mini and find its stats in a few minutes.

here is a screen shot of the mini my page ins are 248 mb my page outs are 0 with 8gb ram. once again it means I don't exceed my ram much.

the op has 300000 page outs for 1,200,000! bad then he has very full hdds so the cpu has to spend a lot of time finding space on a hdd when it runs out of ram. if he could copy his hdds on an external and empty them a lot it should help quite a bit.
