Since upgrading to X5675, 3.06 6 core, my cMP has shutdown & rebooted several times. The iStat temps shows cpuA @ 37c & cpu B @ 32c, which from what I can find is within specs. Intel lists the max temps @ 81c, so I'm way below that. Also, I haven't zapped my memory because it show them at 1333Mhz instead of the 1066 before upgrade. So didn't think I needed to do that. CPUs are 95w so don't think they pulling to much power. This has happened with no load basically, such as just on this forum.

System:
2010 5,1
32gigs of 1333 memory
AMD HD 1070 graphic card ( 6 & 8 pin connectors)

been running the HD 1070 for a couple of years, never a problem (yet). Can throw my 5770 or the gt120 back in if that may be a problem? Any additional info, let me know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

AMD HD 1070??? What's that?

Also, didn't the Mac shutdown OR reboot? They are VERY different. If that's an overheat, It should be a hard shutdown, not reboot. You may not even able to switch on the Mac until SMC reset. Or let it cool down for a couple of minutes.

But if it's reboot, then may be the CPU just didn't seat properly. So, some intermittent signal cause data error etc. Of course, it can also be one (or both) CPU is faulty.

Besides, do you remember when those shutdown / reboot happened? Is it when the PCU under stress? Your 37 / 32C clearly are the idle temperature, which of course are very far away from the Mac temperature.

Oh sorry about that. It's a HD7970. It was actually just a reboot. The screen went black then the mac rebooted. It definitely wasn't under stress. It wasn't a hard shutdown. Just now when I woke it up the screen something I had never seen before. Black & white waves on it. Don't know anyway to describe it really. I think i may be my card going south. Will put my old card back in & see what happens.
