Okay Peaopl I finally broke down and bought the power logix g4 1.6ghz 7447a upgrade. :) :) :) :D
My Digital Audio 533 mhz now is 1.6ghz
and It's like 3 times as fast as it was.:D
and it worked. It's got a new life, now just
HAVE TO UPGRADE THE RAM .75GBS MORE
I was just wondering which linux distro runs good with upgraded g4s.

Yippie.

what did you have before the upgrade?

EDIT: oops, didnt read the post fully. it was late at night.

lol, it probably runs about 3 times as fast, because the chip you put into it, is three times faster :p

Nice mod. I wanna have a G4/5 PM to run music recording stuff on. i want a tower, because then i can put sound cards, etc into it.

Hello

I have a 533 mhz, I have the debian internet install disk, ubuntu, and kubuntu disks.

Breezy and Sarge version
I have a 6 gb hard drive for it

Ubuntu is great. But why not run OSX? Just curious, but that machine is pretty capable of handling anything you can throw at it right now...

Nope. A single 1.6 is about $200-300 cheaper than a Mac Mini. For me, upgrading the processor was mostly about being able to keep my system running smoothly, as it is more upgradeable than a mini (and the parts ar cheaper too). ;)

Nice. Congrats on the upgrade. Ive been happily running a Powerlogix DP 1,7 in my Cube for a while now and it makes all the difference! Also fun to tell people that your 6 year old G4 will run circles around their newer computer!:) Max out that ram and you will have a completely different beast on your hands.

As for CPU upgrades, cant go wrong with OWC prices, and I think most of their CPU upgrades come with a 3 year warranty.

Just bought this same update too, after reading this thread. Unfortunately, my motherboard was too old for the dual cpu upgrade, so thats why I went this this single. Hopefully this should bring some new life into it.
