No. W series Xeon is for the single CPU board. You will want either e5645 for 2.45ghz or any of the X5600 series in order to maintain the dual CPU config.

What X5600 series cpu would be faster then my 2.93 CPU
I use izotope RX2 for 24bit /192 audio rendering and Handbreak

Just a warning, if you saw the price for the W processor, im afraid the dual processor capable Xeons are expensive. Ebay is probably the cheapest way to find them, but they are still pricey. Also, use the search button in this forum, you will find tons of threads about upgrade options.

Also be aware you question of what is faster than your 2.93....well, you adding a total of 5 more cores to your arsenal which even if you choose a lower clock speed might benefit you if your program uses all the cores. You do the math.

top of the line x5600 is this

be very careful you can crush your pins in the sockets..

you have lidless cpus the ones above have lids that mean 1/16 to 1/8 inch difference in clearance since the lidded replacements are thicker you must shim the heatsink between 1/16 and 1/8 inch or risk crushing your pins. it means use some nylon washers one or two on each bolt of the heat sink.

take this warning. I didnt see that you had a 2009. 2009 = lidless, 2010 = has lides

W5590 seems to be fine for DP though?

I have no experience with 5500 series xeons. As I stated before I didnt realize he was looking for a 2009 upgrade. I assumed 2010 as the Wseries he listed was newer and seemed like he was asking if it would work. Had I seen he has a 2009 I wouldnt have commented.

You may be right. However given the W series he provided in his OP I believe he may be looking for a 6 core processor. And the W5590 you listed is a 4core CPU

The W5590 (TDP of 130W) has successfully been used in the dual 2.26 2009 MP and there are threads about it in this forum, look for one started by gugucom. Actually, I have just received a pair of W5590s and am planning to do the upgrade myself when I find some time...
