Well apparently theres a crack in my screen, but i dont know how. It didnt fall and its in a case with a screen protector. anyway, is it worth taking it to the apple store to see what they say?

you can all laugh at me now :(

Is the crack major enough enough to warrant a trip to the Apple Store? Does it affect the screen in any way? Or impair the phone's ability to operate? If not, I don't think you really need to get it checked out. A nice genius might swap it, but don't count on it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

That's exactly what happened to my 1st gen iPhone. A crack just showed up mysteriously one day. Unfortunately I never found that cool genius to swap for a new one. But the phone worked fine, and I started not to notice the crack after awhile. It was only when other people pointed it out to me...

Thanks guys. Its still functional, i'm just annoyed. To have them look at it, do I call and set up an appointment or just walk in? Also, how much is it if i want to replace it?

its going to run you about $199, but when this happened to my white 16gb 3gs i was actually able to get on the horn with the vice president of applecare and have $99 of the $199 refunded.

well worth it considering the screen will only get worse over time

I had an iphone 2g a while back and it had a pretty big crack in the screen. there were parts of the screen that weren't even there, lol. The whole top half of the screen didn't work. I took it to apple and told them it was my fault bc it was and I was very polite to the genius. He told me to hang on and came back five minutes later with a "replacement iPhone" no box, no charger, just a phone. It was $100, and with my $100 apple store credit from paying the original price for the iphone I got it for free!!! You just have to get lucky and find the nice genius that is having a good day. And be nice!

I would suggest replacing the LCD or Digitizer or both yourself (depending on what is cracked). I just had to do this for my wife's 3gs which is only 4 months old. The LCD will cost you about $90 and the digitizer is $50. You dont need special tools other than a very small phillips screwdriver. It took me about 30 mins to replace the entire screen assembly. Everything is good as new. Good luck!

My coworker had the same problem. He got it fixed for around $100 from some guy through craigslist. He say it took about 10 minutes while he watched.

ill take a picture when i have access to a digital camera. i use the phone as my camera most of the time so my real camera is at home.

the actual screen isnt cracked, it seems like its under it. its in a case and has a screen protector too.

If its under the screen chances are very very good they will replace it for you.

The screen on my phone cracked. I took it to the Apple Store. I showed them that the crack was not a scratch on the surface due to rough handling, as the surface was smooth.
He took the phone to the back, and when he emerged ten minutes later the phone had a new screen. No charge.

Do i have to set up an appointment for this?

Should i take off my screen protector and case?

Bump. Anyone know the appropriate steps to follow (asked questions above)?

You should be able to leave the case and screen protector on. It doesn't really matter. You may have to buy a new screen protector. Just set up an appointment and they should take care of it.

they replaced it! thanks for all your help guys.

They told me since it looked like it originated from the corner, yet no damage was visible in the corner, and that since the glass wasnt broken, it probably wasnt me. they said it looks like it was pressure related so maybe dont press against it hard or something.

anywho, it was pretty fast besides the fact that it was SO BUSY there. it probably wouldve taken no time at all if there wasnt like a million people in the store. its the only store in the state so i guess thats understandable.

oh, and this screen has no yellow tint, and is brighter and sharper than the last one! yeaaah!

ive always wondered...
say you get chip on your screen, could you bring your phone to like...speedy glass or what not, and have them put the glass sealant in it.

if it stops a car windshield from developing a larger crack, shouldn't it save an iphone?

Nice. I got mine replaced also, but I had to pay (no visible dent on the center where it cracked).

BTW, it's a good idea to get a case for it at this time. I suggest the Incase Click Me. I have this case and it's incredible how well it holds and protects.

Also, protect your screen (since this was the damaged part) with this Click. You might be out $50, but the protection you get is worth it. See it as an investment in case your iPhone ever falls again.

I learned to use a case, the hard way, by paying $199. So, from one iPhone user to another, use a case!

I don't think so. Windshields have a plastic layer in them to help prevent it from shattering. iPhones don't have this. I think this is why you never see a chip in an iPhone only cracks. So chip repair won't get you anywhere as it never chips.

Thats my logic at least..

When I took my cracked screen 3g to the genius bar, the 1st thing done was to look in the ear phone jack and tell me I had water damage so the warranty was shot. I called missionrepair.com. I believe it was $125 and they sent me via fedex a box for packing. I took it to a fedex shipping facility and had the phone back in 4 days - sent it Monday and it was back Thursday. Great service and price, they replaced the screen and digitizer, it's worked perfectly for 1 year. ed
