I recently noticed a crack on the back of my iPhone 3G in the middle. It starts at the bottom where the USB cable connects, and goes upto just above the "CE" mark. If you don't live in Europe, its on the same line where the FCC mark is.

Anyway, I've heard that these cracks are a widespread problem? Will Apple replace my phone out of warranty because of this?

I also noticed the bottom corners of my iPhone look a little damaged...I've dropped it in the past a few times (but who hasn't?)* and it's been mostly fine, but now I'm worried I won't get a replacement.

Could this get worse? The crack seems pretty deep. If it gets bigger and the back of the iPhone breaks in half then what are my options?

Will I get a free replacement?

If not, can they replace the back? If so, how much, or if I can do it myself for a lot cheaper, where do I start?

If not, how much is a replacement iPhone 3G? I think I heard that some people were receiving cheaper replacements since the 3GS was released?

*If you haven't, don't just quote me to say this. Thanks ;)

Do not say you dropped it. They'll replace it under warranty for the known crack problem.

I'm not under warranty.

Why would you expect a replacement for an iPhone you dropped? Even if there is a known problem with cracking, I would think dropping the iPhone would void any claim you had.

Take it to the Apple Store...they will replace it for free or charge you...All of us here won't know...we are just like you...making guess....

Just be friendly with them and things will work out...

Just go see them at the store.

I have a crack from dropping mine.

I was at the Apple store for a different problem and the apple employee saw my phone and told me to make an appointment for the phone. He said "If it were me, I'd replace that for free, but it depends on who you get."

So there's your answer: Be nice.

(I haven't done anything about my own yet, btw.)
