While moving my computer into my new office, I managed to bump my Studio Display and watched in horror as it bounced off the floor. The glass has some cracks running through it, it still works, but I believe the glass and the display are one piece and need to all be replaced. Does anyone have any suggestions or know what my options are? How badly am I going to get bent over since accidental damage isn't covered by the warranty?

It uses an LG LM270QQ2 (SD)(A1) panel, Apple Part number 661-25195.
Apple provides a Repair Guide:

I've no idea what Apple repairers charge for the repair, but there are vendors selling the panels.

Here's an eBay vendor in China selling it for $596, who ships internationally:

You (or your repair shop) will have to transfer the webcam electronics from the old panel.
And you will need new adhesive strips, Apple part number 076-00517, 076-00545.

That sucks man - sorry to hear that :(

As I see it, you have three options
  1. Buy a new monitor (apple or another manufacturer
  2. Have Apple repair it. The cost may be painful, but it depends if the lcd panel is damaged or just the glass that sits in front of it.
  3. Self repair - Try to buy the parts off ebay/ali express and do it yourself.
I would first take it to apple and see how expensive the repair will be.

It could be like Apple Watch, where they classify it as a "repair" but give you a new unit instead.

When you say warranty, are you talking about AppleCare+? If so, accidental damage is covered for the Studio Display

I have it on my Studio, but not the Studio Display. The one year limited warranty doesn't cover accidental damage.

Am I right in thinking LM270QQ29 must be the nano-texture glass, and LM270QQ2 is the standard ("iMac") glass?

In the US, Apple charges $879.12 (after $88 credit for returning the replaced part) for either one!

There is a 7-day rental tool kit for $49 that includes everything you need for a single repair.

Assuming Apple will let you rent the tool kit without also buying the display part, then with the eBay part you could do a proper DIY for about US $700. If you DIY using Apple for everything, then it's around $950.

So I'd expect an authorized repair shop to charge around $1050? I don't know what kinds of discounts on parts from Apple they might have access to. It's an hour minimum of skilled labor -- even if they've done it many times before, it's not like they're doing it every day. There's prep time and post-repair time.

If you're used to working on computers, then (with the right tools and replacement parts) this won't be terribly stressful. But if you've never done a DIY repair or upgrade, you'll need to make sure you understand the instructions well so you know what to expect before you begin, and be patient. Be careful with internal connectors and cables. That's where experience helps, and is worth paying for.

If you're in Europe, that Avenue.Mac site looks great:

Hmm. Thank you all for the advice! I work in print/production so I don't have a ton of down-time. I'll see how bad the cost is to repair at apple and if it's horrible, I'll look into the DIY method.
