OK, so tonight I was playing Civ IV on my Black Macbook C2D and I raised my palm off of the palm rest and part of the case came up with it....

Do you think that Apple will cover this, or do you think they will say it is from user neglect or whatever...I haven't dropped it or mistreated it in any way...it did get pretty warm under there while I was playing the game, but it does when I am working on a chapter in my thesis too...what do you guys think?

That's a neat trick.

I'd certainly go into the Apple Store and give it a try. The people there are nice enough I'd bet they'd laugh and replace it for you.

get it checed out by apple as soon as possible, were there some of the macbooks that had expanding batteries and that is oner that battery compartment.

So, there have been instances of batteries expanding and breaking the case?

Edit: I don't think that is what happened here, I think the case stuck to my palm...

i think they might replace it. i think there have been problems with the magnetic latch causing the case to crack in the same area that you describe.

do a search about the macbook magnetic latch.

there might have been a problem that you never knew about

I think it is a bit to the right of the magnetic latch...but maybe its bigger then I thought it was...

DAmn I hope that doesn't happen to mine.

Give the Apple store a try, they're usually good with these type of things.

I have the exact same crack on my MacBook, but I haven't taken it in yet. I'm waiting for more problems, I guess -- I also have a flickering screen, hairline cracks around the outside of the lower shell, defective power cord, intermittent battery problems, etc. There's just a crack, though -- the part hasn't fractured enough to actually come loose.

Someone posted a similar pic of his white MB on another thread - I don't know what happened in the end tho...

Just go ahead and call Apple. When I owned my Blackbook, I had this exact same problem. Like others have already said, it's caused by the magnetic latches and the rubber stoppers on the screen cracking the topcase.

I called AppleCare when the problem arose, and they immediately covered it under warranty, no questions asked. I received the shipping box the next day, and then I had my Blackbook back two days later, with a brand new topcase. They even replaced the trackpad and keyboard! That is what great service is!

It will most definitely be covered. Just be sure to be very specific with your description, and they will take care of you. Good luck!

Yes, great service, BUT the design is faulty an the problem will keep coming back unless there is a change in terms of reinforcement underneath or something else. Apple will repair it under warranty, but what happens once the first year is up? This is an issue that will continue to pop up and it seems repair by replacing with an identical part is NOT a solution but rather a temporary band aid.

Precisely why I upgraded to the MacBook Pro. I didn't want to hassle with the faulty cases and all of the cracking.

Does anybody know if the cases have been revised to accomodate for this roblem in the new revision of MacBooks?

Just to add another conformation to this, took my white macbook Core Duo in for exactly the same problem and the Genius behind the bar told me flat out it's "a design fault". The part of the case the stops come down on when the lid is closed doesn't actually have anything underneath it and, over time, it tends to get small hairline cracks. At some point it WILL break.

As far as I know there is currently no modification by Apple to actually fix the problem. On the upside you get a new top case, keyboard and trackpad when they fix it. Not much of an upside I grant you but still...

Have a look at this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3409154#3409154

Looks like some people got it fixed for free, so it's worth not taking 'no' as an answer to whoever you talk to. looks like Apple doesn't have an official line on this.

Maybe work googling this as I'm sure there must quite a few different forum threads about this problem.

Interesting reason to upgrade.

Most people who have reported this problem, haven't generally added which revision their machine was - although, I'm pretty sure that most of the ones who did were using the orginal models. The problem was largely flagged towards the end of 2006, although people (like the OP) are still reporting it. Given that Apple hasn't acknowledged this (or as far as I'm aware) and that sites like Macintouch and Macfixit haven't been inundated with reports from readers, I'd guess that this isn't a widespread problem... not that, that's much consolation to those who have been affected.

No one seems to know what's causing the problem - a design flaw seems a popular choice. Although, I think stress fractures caused by the plastic moulding process is a likely culprit. If it is, Apple's not the only manufacturer to have problems with it by any means.

I have a C2D middle-range whitebook, made in the 2nd week of 2007. And, entertainingly enough, the crack just completed and a big chunk of palm rest is now pointed right at me

OK, folks, I just took this to my local (if you call an hour and half drive local:D ) Apple Store and they are going to fix it for me. He did say it was cosmetic and that he shouldn't fix it, but he was going too. They had to order the part, so I am going to take it back in when he calls and lets me know the part is in. He ordered it this morning. Anyway, I have been to this store several times and they are always good to me, but he did say that he shouldn't cover it because it was cosmetic....

Anyway, I am pleased though because it is getting fixed and I didn't even have to say anything. I just pulled out my computer and opened it...:D :apple:

do the latest macbooks have this problem?

I don't know, I was not aware that it was even a known problem with MacBooks until I created this thread....I haven't heard of any changes in design, but I honestly don't know...

As I've said above, it's a bit hard to judge as people reporting this problem on forums don't always say what revision their machine is - plus no one is 100% sure what's causing it.

Because I'm a 'who drank my water?' rather than 'the glass is half full' guy, I would say probably yes :p But as I say, there isn't loads of info to say for sure.

However, on a more positive note, it does seem to affect only a tiny number of users - albeit it is a problem reported on quite a few forums. If it was more widespread, I'm sure Apple would be forced to acknowledge it - also, I have't read much on Macintouch's daily reader reports, which I've found to be an excellent source of info re: reliability issues.

... but he did say that he shouldn't cover it because it was cosmetic....
Well, the important thing was that they got it sorted for you. :)

However, I would take what they said with a pinch of salt. True, they might have been totally upfront and honest with you - but on the flipside, they might be taking that approach to fix an known issue without taking any responsibilty for causing it; I'm pretty sure that some people were told they same thing about the MB discolouration problem (i.e. it's just cosmetic) before Apple acknowledged it and started replacing it no questions asked.

Yeah, I seem to recall several users on here complaining about that very fact concerning the discoloration....Oh well, at least they are fixing it for me, though they still haven't called me to let me know the part was in....:)
