It's with a heavy heart that I write about my PB's cracked screen. Since paying $1250 to repair it at my local Apple Store is not exactly an option, I'm looking into DIY replacement options. Does anyone know if a higher res 1680x1050 screen would be compatible to replace my 1440x900 screen? Thanks for any advice anyone would care to share.

I had wondered that a few times....it'd be pretty sweet (I'm a resolution whore....even if my iBook is only 1024x768...I'd have more if I could).

While I suppose anything is possible, depending on how much work you're willing to commit to it, I don't really know the specifics on how the video output is connected to the panel and if any assumptions are made when it is designed ("hardcoded" values in the conversion hardware because they will always use the same panel).

Let us know what you figure out.

Possible compatibility issue?

Thanks for the response. Upon further research, I found official Apple repair manuals online:

http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repa..._15_133ghz.pdf

On page 5 of this PDF, where it discusses "New Parts and Procedures", it says:

Top Case –As the sleep magnet has been relocated to the display bezel, the sleep sensor has moved from the trackpad flex to the edge of the top case. Previous top cases will not work with this system.

If I bought a replacement screen (including the entire top assembly) from a higher res PB, can anyone tell if I would have problems installing it into my Feb 2005 1.67ghz 17" PB?

Thanks!

Also, in that same PDF referenced above, pages 189 & 190 of the PDF show exploded views of my PB & the newer model where the display in question would be coming from. It shows several part numbers as being different including the Display Panel Assembly and the Top Case Assembly. Thought I'd point that out in case that makes a difference.
