OK, I have heard SO much about this Craigslist, I decided to check it out. If you answer an ad, and you don't live in that area, are you not able to even try to get the item? This is so confusing

Whether or not the person will do business with you is entirely up to them. With Craigslist - they'll almost always go for the local, and deal in cash. It's just easier, and removes a lot of the trust issues of eBay, et al.
yeah, i sell a lot of stuff on craigslist, i don't even bother to reply people who tells me they aren't local.
I guess depend on how far you are, if you aren't too far, maybe you can drive there if you really want what you wanted. but almost certain, people don't ship stuff on craigslist

That is the beauty of cragislist, dealing local. But I saw something I wanted in San Francisco once and since I was going to be up there, I just asked him if I could give a good faith payment via paypal and then pay the rest (including pay pal fees) to him when I got there in 2 weeks. He let me and I got what I wanted.
Nigerian scammers love computer ads on craigslist. Got two of them today. WHen I called them on it and I was cursed/cussed out for being an "***** white murderer"! The other claimed to be in Georgia so I told him/her that I have a Mac pal there -- I do -- who'd be willing to do the transaction in person.
Of course, I've never heard from them again.

OMG. I love Craigslist. I was looking for an iPod nano and within 4 hours of contacting the seller, I walked away with a brand new iPod for $150 less than retail. That same night, I posted an ad to sell my iPod mini and the next day at noon, I was meeting a buyer to sell it.
Getting great local deals and not having to pay sales taxes (13.5%) and shipping is just pudding. I live in a major city, so the buy/sells are easier than smaller cities. Craigslist works best if you deal locally, in cash, and with popular consumer items. Everything else I use eBay.

I sold my powerbook, my monitor, my ipod, a powermac, and soon to be a few more on craigslist. You'll always get the people who want you to ship it to their son who will be in college or to their friend in Ghana or something, but I just delete those and answer the ones where people want to pick up in person. I've had nothing but success and for apple stuff, I find it better to deal there where they get to toy around with the product before buying.
In the past moth I've probably sold about $1440 worth of stuff and I couldn't be happier. That plus I picked up a tibook off ebay for $250!!!

After months of no interest for a trade for my iMac G5 on MR I went to craigslist, and within a few days, I had a PowerMac G4 with a Cinema Display sitting on my desk. The guy is so damn cool, I still keep in touch with him.

For those who don't know, TNT is a UK shipping company similar to UPS or FedEx.
And Craigslist is FAR superior to eBay when it comes to selling consumer electronics, as long as what you're trying to sell isn't targeting too specific of a market. (For example, I've sold a PB, a Mac mini, a TV, and other common electronics on Craigslist, but to sell a power supply that only fits a small number of Sony PCs, I had to go to eBay.) The fact that Craigslist is free and you actually meet buyers/sellers and you deal in CASH (or occasionally checks) makes it a lot safer, cheaper, and easier than eBay...

I love craigslist too, and have bought and sold a good deal that way, but I always insist on local sales for cash only and prefer to meet in a public place. Unfortunately, even though I clearly state in all of my ads that I will only deal locally and for cash, I inevitably get at least 2 emails from scammers within an hour after posting an ad; I just disregard them.
