If it's such a great computer, why is he selling it for so little? I looked on the Apple store page, and that model configured with apple memory/disk is $3699, so why in the world would the poster even consider selling for 1999?

Being you and the ad poster are both in Idaho, send him a message and ask to see it. Arrange a time, without giving any personal info of yourself (including your phone number) and see what comes of it.

The Applecare coverage is nice. And the timing works out. (Purchased March 2010). I'd check the serial numbers when you meet in person to verify he showed you a real one. Otherwise, I'd say its a good deal. If anything is wrong with it Applecare has your back for another 2 years.

I have no idea how you people do math in Boston, but here I get $2900 with a quad-core i5 2.8/2TB/16 gigs ram/Apple care. And thats using Apples prices on ram and apple care.

Regardless, the one on CL is a 2009 2.8 i7.

I think $1999 is about right.

You could get a 2010 2.93 i7 refurb for $1899, plus $100 to get 12 gigs of ram and another $110 for applecare (from LA Computer) -- so maybe only another $100ish to get the newer 2010 i7 with all the same features.

Yeah, I must be missing something, because this doesn't honestly seem like that great of a deal. Average at best.

If you read the MR Guides and search the forums you'll find quite a few threads on this issue and plenty of information and warnings about buying and/or selling on Craigslist.

Even Craigslist warns you about scams: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

So we should avoid Craigslist altogether? ???

What's the harm in making an inquiry?

You worried they'll get your email address? If so create a new one on GMAIL just for the purpose of investigating deals on CraigsList.

The only rules I use for Craigslist are:

1) Buy LOCAL - Never buy anything that needs to be shipped.

2) Make the transaction in a PUBLIC PLACE - not YOUR house, and not HIS house.

3) Make sure you can test out the unit before handing over money.

4) Leave your money in your car until you have checked out the unit.

I've bought a few high dollar items off of Craigslist - always met and made the deals at a local McDonalds.

I got $1500 for my i5 quad core 27" with 8gb of ram and 1tb hdd without Applecare in June of last year.

I was looking at the Apple store iMac Base 27 inch is 1999, added quad core I7 ($200) plus 16GB ram ($600), plus 2TB HD, but I clicked 2TB HDD plus 256GB SSD which got me the 3699.

I've recently sold my similarly-spec'd iMac for a comparable price. I know I coule have sold it higher, but I had to sell it fast and even at the lower price I did have a hard time finding a buyer and people were still tying to knock the price off. I'd check it out if I were you.
