I have a completely crashed system that won’t even begin start up. There was an extensions conflict after I attempted to install Iomega HotBurn driver. I booted in safe mode and deleted all files with HotBurn in the name – as recommended in Iomega’s support pages, then shut down. Now my G4 won’t even begin to start up. Is there any way of resolving this problem without re-installing OS. I don’t have many of the software CD’s and there is also a large amount of image editing on my desktop.

Have you tried starting up your G4 with the Mac OS installer CD? Need to use the C key during startup. Then I would run Repair Permissions from the CD. I you have the AppleCare CD you could also run a check of you system from the CD.

When you power the machine on, are there any unusual indications? Like, the power light blinks a certain number of times, or there's an unusual sound, something like that. That info can be helpful for diagnostics.

At exactly what point does it stop acting normal during startup?
