Hi everyone,

Sorry to post what I am sure is super trivial and on repeat for many of you, but I've tried my best to resolve this and I'm out of luck. My 2020 iMac just switches itself off from time to time - I'll be in the middle of a design job, pop out the room, and when I come back..powered off. I've attached a report and I'm really curious as to what it could be. The second issue is freezing from time to time, everything locks up, the wheel of death even stops spinning, it stays like this for 30 seconds or so, then all of a sudden, the screen will fill with hundreds of yellow, orange and brown lines, almost like a Scottish kilt pattern, then it goes to the login screen. This happens a lot when I use iMovie.

Model Identifier: iMac20,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 3,3 GHz
Memory: 24 GB
System Firmware Version: 1916.80.2.0.0 (iBridge: 20.16.3045.0.0,0)

Thanks a lot for reading, really appreciated - and really curious.

It's very likely a hardware problem. Bad hardware could lead to a kernel panic. Your case could be a badly connected cable or up to a chip failure. Unfortunately it can't be fixed by reinstalling. I suggest you to backup your data and take it to Apple or a repair shop.

Thank you for letting me know. After 3 years, it's probably due a check up.

I had the same, my previous iMac powered off randomly after a few hours. It was a hardware problem, my local Apple Store handled it very well.

Not good to hear, but good to know - I'll drop off the beast this week I think.

If its has some kind of hardware fault that will cost a lot to fix , and it still boots, i would trade it in for what credit it still good for at a store that still sells the 2020 27” imacs, (refurb or new) example BB

if you still have Apple Care on it, maybe it can be serviced buying you a few years.
