Crazy or no: Saving old .ipa files after updating?

I’m seeing a lot of apps with ‘iOS 4’ support, which tells me they may be building in iAd hooks. Don’t know how odious this will be, but I’d like to have the option of going back to the non-iAd form if I want to.

Its not standard for me to make a folder, e.g. ‘ipa 09062010’ and put all files from the trash into this folder, which is then sent to my NAS for safe keeping.

Anyone else doing this?

You'd rather have those annoying AdMob ads than iAds? I suppose you can save those .ipas if you want to, but I think iAds take up about the same amount of space on the screen as the AdMob ads and don't make you leave the app if you click on them.

I save them just so that one day when new versions no longer support 3.1.3 for my original or 3G iPhones, I can still have a version that does.

I'm sort-of looking forward to that, just to see how developers will react if I email them and ask where to download the last 3.1.3-compatible version

In reality, I am of course saving copies of the apps so that I can still use them.

On a simliar note does anyone have the ipa for TV Guide.co.uk? The one with the heart icon.

The new update doesn't work on 3.1.3 and I'd like to be able to go back.

I wouldn't say saving old .ipa files is crazy. It's nice to have a backup of your app in case an update requires a version of iOS that your device doesn't support (or that you don't want to upgrade to). Personally, I'd just check the update notes to see if it requires iOS 4 or later. As long as you check that, there should be no reason to save the old .ipa files.

Couldn't agree more with this post. For example, Beejive IM ($9.99) would never implement iAds. However, current ad-based apps most certainly may. So don't worry about developers adding iAds to all your favourite paid apps. iAds should only be on free ones. So I don't think you should bother with saving the old .ipa files.
