Just sent in my 2-month MacBook Air which started squeaking in just a couple of weeks. Luckily still in warranty and they said they'll replace the whole screen clamshell for me for free.

Certainly I wouldn't mind much since it's free, but is it absolutely necessary to replace the whole thing just to stop the hinge squeaking?

yes, it is necessary to replace the entire screen. The aluminum behind the panel makes up part of the hinge and it is cheaper/faster/easier to just replace the entire screen than to disassemble the entire panel to replace the 'lid'. This information comes directly from an Apple authorized repair man... and is covered in detail in another thread.

If you find the service manual, it states to replace the whole thing. There is no hinge part number or anything of that nature. I though the apple people were full of *hit but the service manual supports what they are saying.

don't use wd40.
at most, if you know what you're doing. take apart the display. at the cringe area, rub some silicone grease... the same stuff they put in car door hinges to stop it creaking.
that would do it.

Dont..

Don't use WD-40... will mess it up!

The Hinge is part of the screen.. its all one part! so when you need to get the hinge changed they change the whole screen aswell :)
