Create App to Communicate between 2 Mac's on the Same Network

This is my first time trying to create a macOS app. The idea for the app is simple, I just have no idea how to go about it. Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have 2 Mac's on the same network but no internet connection. I have set up the network and file transfer is working perfectly. I want to create an application that will allow me to push button on one Mac and display a message on the other Mac.

Any advise?

Messages will do it if you enable Bonjour.

OP, because Messages can do it already, most people would hesitate to use any third-party app because of privacy concerns -- who is the third party, have they written any backdoors into the app, etc.

It'll be a fun exercise, I'm sure, and you might as well look into how Messages does it.
